I'm sitting listening online to a recommendation I will make for the 2nd time to these Forums. College radio stations can be rough-hewn and all over the map. You'll be amply rewarded if you find a time of the week and a music genre that work for you. A web search that works is to pull up http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/locate on the web. Enter a zip code of your camping or home location, select 'College' in the station format and you're on your own.... (you were afraid I'd say that).

Some require additional services like RealPlayer if you listen online. AND that is a viable proposition ONLY if you have a broadband connection. Hopefully you can find something locally that you can connect to directly. Radio station websites usually have a programming schedule.

My favorite: KSYM 90.1 FM - San Antonio, TX. The website allows you to get a free 14 day trial of RealPlayer. I enjoy listening later Friday afternoons and Saturday afternoons. My can't-miss is Sundays from noon to 2:00 for the 'Hillbilly Hitparade.' This makes me want to get my computer hooked up to my home stereo!

One of our favorites in the St. Louis area...KDHX 88.1, they are on the web and offer a HUGE variety of music genres. Rock-a-billy, road house, blues, old C & W, raggae, ska, irish, spanish, latin, bluegrass, hard rock, techno...all in two hopur blocks round the clock.

We've listened to the web site when unable to get any "good" radio around the country. KDHX.org

We tried something different for our last long trip - I can only listen to "boy bands" for just so long and the kids quickly tire of country stations, so I found some old-time radio shows on the net and burned some CD's.

Most of these shows are in the public domain, that is, the copyrights expired year ago, so no worries about the RIAA busting down the door of the Airstream.

There is a pretty handy web site out there,

They have them sorted by artist and type. You can download old Perry Mason shows, Gene Autrey, Batman and The Shadow among others. Everyone enjoyed them and they made the miles pass by quickly.

I am a very lucky man. I listen to my baby girl ( 12 ) singing while I am on the road. We camp at bluegrass festivals and she is like a sponge musically.
The kids these days!!!!! ( Did I say that ?) She has some
kinda MP3 ( R2D2 ?) that hooks up to the trailers sound system.
She claims that we have the capability to store 26,000 songs.
It recharges off the cigarette lighter socket
The unit is the size of a bar of soap. Hum a few bars ??????
It might take a while.

Only problem now is that newer coaches came with a fairly good CD player and few ways to connect it to the stereo. I am considering buying one of those FM transmitters as having the iPod for the hundreds of songs I bring is far easier than hauling a few dozen CDs.

I bring a mix of nearly everything.

Silvertwinkie, I apologize for not including your favorite music in my poll choices. Never entered my mind.

I'd hold off on the FM transmitter. Alpine just announced they're going to include iPod connectivity in a new line of in-dash CD players this summer. You'll be able to control the iPod, see track info on the CD player display, and even recharge the iPod battery while traveling. I plan to put one in my tow vehicle.

I will hold off and see what Alpine does. The Sony that the Safari came with sounds nice, but it is a light show. When I turn it on, it's like the 4th of July!

I know what you mean about the Sony. I have one in my '82 Mercedes 300D, and it looks totally out of place. Sounds good, but I have to keep the user manual in the glove compartment so my passengers can adjust the stupid thing, and the electroluminescent* display is annoying.

*Did you know Safari has a built-in spell checker?

We had an '82 300D too! It was magenta something, but basically was yellow/tan looking. It was the first year that engine got a turbo. It lived through 3 teens and a near total. That thing would not die...we donated it after it turned 260,000 miles!

I miss that car though. We had a '75 300D a '72 280 SEL 4.5 and a '91 300 SDL, but the '82 and the '72 were my favorites. The '72 had leather and as all Mercedes leather have that distinct leather smell...........I digress......

Our '82 came with the "Becker Auto Radio" complete with tape. I must have adjusted the tape heads on that at least 50 times!

My listening tastes run across the board. I have Sirius satellite radio in my SUV. On my recent cross country trip I listened to classic rock, alt country, swing and big bands, old standards, bluegrass, folk, NPR, and old time radio shows.
I could also pick up local weather forcasts, the trucker channel, and the comedy channel.
I brought some audio books, The Da Vinci Code among them, and never even cracked the cellaphane.

Like many of the above I listen to a variety. I like to burn a cd of different stuff for a road trip. Last time I had Buffet, Eagles, Grateful Dead, Beatles mixed in with Norman Brown, Charley Parker and Dizzy, Jeff Golub, some country tunes and folky stuff like Leo Kotke. I also carry my own cd in case I run into someone that might want to check it out.
The road changes so i like to have adaptable tunes to match the mood. In addition to cd's ,I carry about a dozen cassettes, as I have hundreds at home.
I still have 300 or so Lp's but they don't work well in the Airstream.
