Mt. Rushmore Trip

Heading to Rushmore approx May 24 from Oregon. Planning on staying in or around Custer. Any recommendations on camp grounds good or bad? Local interests as well things to see? I have a book coming from travel bureau.

We went a couple of years ago and stayed three nights. We camped in the stockade north campground. We had an electrical hookup site and there was water available nearby. We enjoyed our stay there. The bathroom/shower facility a short walk away was very nice and clean.

We entered from Custer on highway 16. The campground is the first one you will come to. The park is roughly laid out in a big figure 8 shape. The northern loop will take you to Mt. Rushmore which is a must see. This loop goes through some amazing country with views and vistas at every turn. You will also drive through many tunnels, some of which are very narrow. I had to pull in the mirrors on my tundra in a couple of them.

The southern loop goes through more fields and grasslands and is the place to see wildlife. We saw many Buffalo and wild donkeys too. We were there in the fall and they were going to do the buffalo roundup a few days after we left.

We came into the park from the northwest. We stopped and looked at Crazy Horse but did not pay to enter. The next time we will for sure. I have heard that it is an amazing story told there.

Make sure you read the literature you are going to get. You will have to find a campground early as you cannot pull a trailer through any of the tunnels. You will need to park it and then go sight seeing.

Have fun. We were impressed with the beauty and magnificence of Custer.

mcomeux when in the area stop in Hill City and eat at the Alpine Inn. They only serve steak, two sizes, very inexpensive and pretty good, it's an experience. They start serving at 5:00PM. We stayed at the Mt Rushmore KOA, twice. Huge resort KOA, tons going on, shuttle at night up to the lighting ceremony at Mt Rushmore.
