Mountain Directory

Does anyone have Mountain Directory? ( http://www.mountaindirectory.com/ ) This is an excerpt from their description, "The Mountain Directory books, ebooks and apps give the locations and descriptions of over 700 mountain passes and steep grades in 22 states. They tell you where the steep grades are, how long they are, how steep (%) they are, whether the road is two lane, three lane, or four lane, if there are escape ramps, switchbacks, sharp curves, speed limits, etc."

We are headed out west again and thought it might be helpful.

Thanks,
Greg

I bought the east coast e-book. I believe it costs ~ $15. The user interface has room for improvement for sure. Regardless, it provides very useful information, which I will use prior to each trip. I found out the local roads to my RV shop and the interstate are actually 9% grades!

There is a Mountain Directory East and a Mountain Directory West. We carry both in hard copy. With a low power diesel Classic Moho we use them quite frequently. We take the grades in the slow lane but we haven't found one we couldn't get over.

The ebook is only usable on a PC so it wasn't available for my Mac (and they advised me they don't plan on a Mac version.) As a result I purchased the iPhone app (both east and west). I believe there is an Android version as well.

The information is very good for planning purposes and I have manually entered the information into my Mac App - Road Trip Planner. This app allows me to print out the itinerary with all of the notes for the passes etc.

Unfortunately, the iPhone app does not use the GPS of the phone so is a bit awkward to use when driving to refresh your memory about the suggested speeds, location of run away ramps etc. as you have to manually locate the upcoming pass and tap the icon to bring up the information. I would suggest a co-pilot/navigator handle that chore. (Too bad there isn't a way to bookmark the passes that you will be encountering during the day.)

Also there are no map coordinates provided for entry into a GPS and sometimes just a vague description, e.g. about 5 miles south of Jefferson City MT.

Even with the negatives it is worth the price.

See my posts #s 216, 217, 218 on my thread ADVENTURES OUTSIDE COMFORT ZONE. Re: mtn west for RV, mohome, truckers, etc. not sure if it is the same one. This was very helpful for me. Good luck.

Actually, I clicked on your link...it is the same. Good info.

yes, I also have both books, East and West. They are quite fun to read, and for a route that I am driving the next day I try to make notes so I know what to expect. I've even planned lunch around a mountain pass based on the notes in the book.

A word of caution...I clicked on the link for the Mtn West book yesterday...for Amazon. Then later I checked my email and to my surprise...there was an order confirmation for the book...that I did not order....amt of $88.97!! I quickly called Amazon and was told they have incorporated, for our convenience...a one click order process. WHAT.!!? I had them cancel both the order and to close my account!

I might add...I purchased this book last year...direct from the producer and author....for
$21.95....not ....$88.97!

I just downloaded the Combined Directory app for Android from the Google Play Store, for $24.99, a savings of $7 from the price of the East and West directory apps separately.

It would have been better if the app had one continuous map (or at least one each for East and West) that you could scroll through, rather than being laid out like separate pages in a book that you can't scroll. The app fails to take full advantage of the smartphone screen format. But the information appears to be both accurate and up-to-date based on my limited driving experience in the covered regions.

I have the app. Just note that Hwy 34 in Oregon is not on the directory, neither are any of the pretty big hills along Hwy 101.

It is a really useful tool to have. I should have added in my previous post, that just because there isn't a grade listed on a road, don't assume that there is one. Do a bit more digging and check a second source. I would definitely reccomend it in whatever paper or electronic version you prefer.
