Monarch Pass on Sunday

We are traveling west from Gunnison to Salida.

Any advice on this 11,300 ft pass?

Thanks, BadKat

Don't know anything about the pass, but, I'm pretty sure you are headed East if you go from Gunnison to Salida.

My advice is:

Go up first. Then go down.

You'll be fine, it will be beautiful.

Monarch pass is a well maintained highway open year around. Very doable with a trailer

I pulled a camper up monarch pass last year. We had no troubles going up and the road was clear even though there was about 6 ft or snow at the top. It is 2 lanes all the way up so just take your time. I think it is a 7 mile climb if I remember correctly. It is beautiful so enjoy the ride!

Be sure and give us some feedback after your trip. I'm wondering about a comparison between Monarch pass vs Cottonwood pass. I think I have to choose one or the other to get to Taylor reservoir.

Depending on where you are coming from (Buena Vista), Cottonwood might be shorter but it is partial dirt road at 12,000 feet so weather can be a factor.

I will be interested to see your report if you drove Cottonwood. It is pretty high and is closed in the winters. Some of those don't open until pretty late in the season.

Monarch is long but lots of two lane. Should be no problem in the summer. Cottonwood is dirt from Taylor Reservoir to the top, and while it is quite doable, it can be very bumpy - lots of washboard if it hasn't been graded. But it is spectacular. From the top to Buena Vista is a little narrow for the first few miles - just take your time. Either pass will have lots of traffic on Sunday.

Monarch was beautiful and yes fairly easy. I would not do a dirt pass..Cottonwood. We would like to go up thru Buena Vista but I would never do a dirt pass.

Hope that is not the only path North.
