Monarch Pass

Has any one towed a 30' classic over Monarch Pass and how was it?

Have towed 27 classic as well as a 5th wheel many times, with an F250 no worries. The highway is wide with many places to pull off if needed. Just grab a low gear take your time and enjoy the scenery. Now if your TV is a minivan then you may want to reconsider.

That was a little dicey...

I-50 over Monarch pushed the Suburban to it's limits.
At some point, we began losing power (maybe at the 8,500'), and by the ridge, we stalled into that resort just east of the continental divide.

Once I let the trans/engine cool down, we were on our way.

Trailer was loaded for 2 week outing with full fresh tank... somewhere around 19k lbs.

A buddy of mine went over the the pass last week with a 30' loaded for two months on the road pulled by an F250. Said it was an easy tow.

Your f-250 will pull it just fine. Have a good trip. Wish we were going.

I have crossed Monarch with several rig combinations and never had any trouble.

2003 and 2012 Duramaxs are my favorite.




We always stop at the top and walk through the gift shop.

We came back from norther Colorado and over Monarch. Was sure happy to have my F350 on that one.

There are ways to avoid Monarch, but it depends on your destination.

I have towed my GT over almost all of the Colorado passes with my 5.2 liter Dakota, never had a problem. just don't get in a big hurry and use engine braking on the way down. I generally drive the tachometer and the temperature gauge. Turn the air conditioning off and roll down the windows.

Went over the pass last year with my Tundra and 75 Trade Wind without any problems. Take your time and enjoy the views.

We towed our 31' Classic over Monarch Pass last year loaded for two month's travel with an '08 2700 Duramax with no issues at all.

Like everyone has said, and like on any mountain road, use the transmission and engine to control speed on the way down, take your time, and enjoy the scenery.

It's not the absolute rule, but have always heard if it takes low gear to climb the hill, use low gear to go down the other side of the hill. Use the brakes to slow down when needed, but never ride the brakes.

Well if you loaded a 30' to 19k AND you needed 11,000lbs of stuff for two weeks, you probably should go pretty slow!

I can't seem to leave anything behind...

What I meant was, GCVW was 19k

I guess the engines that make their own atmosphere have nothing to worry about... and when it comes to altitude, there is a replacement for displacement.
