Missoula to Spokane

Just wanted to ask if the interstate from Missoula to Spokane is an easy towing drive? Any mountain passes we should avoid or consider?

Almost the entire way from Missoula to Coeurd'alene on I90 are windy mountain passes. And will be snow/ice covered this time of the year.

Yup, you’ll be going over Lookout Pass, on the MT-ID border.

If you have time, stop in Wallace. It’s the self-proclaimed “Center of the Universe.” Plus they have some terrific antique stores. At the very least, the bordello museum is worth the stop.

Hey,
Suggestion, do the pass in the daytime. Lots of twists a turns before the pass Fourth of July isn't t to bad , but do check the weather before you leave look at Montana DOT cameras and ID DOT cams that lol give you a pretty good idea. Took my 49 caddy ambulance thru those passes many times in The winter.
Good luck

If you're doing the route in summer, you'll be fine.

This time of year, as Silverpuller mentioned, Lookout Pass might be one to avoid. We do this route once or twice per year, sometimes in the shoulder season. We check the forecasts, and if we don't like their look, we will take highway 200 instead. It's a lot lower, and not heavily traveled. When you hit HY 95 in Ponderay, ID (near Sandpoint,) you can drop south to Coeur d'Alene to pick up the Interstate there if you want to travel the last bit on I-90 with no more mountain passes.

Of course, if it's really snowing everywhere, just please wait it out!

As mentioned, you will not have any problems in June. You will go over two passes neither of which are a big deal. And if you'd prefer to not make the entire trip in one day you can boondock for free at the Lookout Pass Ski Area. If you're interested the ski shop will rent you bikes sell you passes to do the Hiawatha ride which is well worth doing.

Missoula to Spokane

The Center of the Universe, as proclaimed by the City of Wallace. Why not? It’s a nice touch for a well-kept turn of the century town.Click image for larger version

Yep...from Missoula. You have Look Out Pass....then Fourth of July....wintertime, you watch the conditions carefully....I run big trucks over this for 10 years..I wouldn’t take my as out ,even if just wet because of the salt spray.....

We make this trip several times in the summer and fall going from Lincoln through Missoula to Spokane and back...I would not take my AS over in winter conditions, however. The mountain pass has lots of twists and turns.

If you have an extra day, Hwy 12 over the Lolo Pass, where Lewis and Clark actually crossed the divide, is a beautiful drive once you get to the Lochsa River on the other side of the mountains. A very long drive along the river with some NFS campgrounds along the way.

I recommend Coeur d’Alen, Idaho. Pretty country, nice people, good food!

I guess I should also explain that it is not a vacation, I am heading up to north of Spokane for a job, I'll be working there each summer until I graduate college (again) in a couple of years then I'll be there permanently. Thanks for the info everyone.
