Miss. River RV Parks/ Other Opportunities

Traveling east from the San Antonio area in June. We want to overnight along the Mississippi, preferably between Natchez and Vicksburg.

It'd just be a late afternoon arrival and mid morning departure the next day, we want to make my brother's place in Atlanta the following day.

Anyone know of any decent spots? Ideally, we'd like to awake to a view of the river- have coffee and breakfast and hit the road.

Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks in advance,

Not quite on the mark for location.

The River View RV Park in Vidalia Louisiana sits right on the river and is a bridge over the river ride from Natchez.

The river was a fascinating watch. The barges were lined up 12 to a tug.

If you are going to eat while in area and like fried chicken.

Country Store, Mr D's, in Lorman MS off Hwy 61 milepost 30.

I didn't think I liked fried chicken but like local places and this did NOT disappoint.

Mr D sang an accapella Ave Maria during lunch.

Not for this time of year.

The park is on the batture, meaning it's the on the river side of the levee. Which means it's also subject to flooding if the river level gets too high, such as right now.

Normal river state at Natchez/Vidalia is 36 feet for this time of year; 48 feet is considered flood state; and right now the river is at 51 feet and only falling by about an inch a day.

While it's not right on the river, Natchez State Park is a possible second choice.

Good info Protag, we were out in Feb a few years back and it had not been rainy. Was mesmerized by life on the river.

Port Gibson has a nice RV park with a river view. If you are willing to bypass a view, want to rough it and want something between Natchez and Vicksburg there is Rocky Springs on the Natchez trace. It's free.

I'd be surprised if River View in Natchez is impacted by the water, it's lower now that a few months back and even then only parts of it were having issues.

Vicksburg has a few places.

River Views are rare in this area, the river is pretty much blocked by all of the levees.

In mid-January the river crested at 56.7 feet at Natchez/Vidalia, so yes, it's lower now than it was then. Best way is to call the park and ask if they're open. And have a Plan B just in case.

Protagonist,
Thank you for the "word of the day". Just spent 15 minutes reading about the Batture.

I love learning!

River View RV Park and Resort is a super place and view. By June, the river should be no problem, but you will need to know the damage and state of the park, so do call. Jim Bowie, made his knife famous by doing away with a few fellows on a sandbar (no longer there) in the river right in front of your park. Natchez, of course, has the antebellum homes and several of them are public and open for viewing year around.

There is another RV park on the Mississippi side and down US 61 SE of Natchez (Plantation RV Park). We have never stayed there, but it is shaded and seemed nice. Have seen a couple of Airstreams there in the past.

We have stayed twice at the River View RV Park across the river from Natchez in LA. There is a great view and a paved walking track right on the banks or benches to watch the river traffic. One of my favorite places to stay.

We stayed one night at River View RV Park two years ago. It is a nice place to stop and has a great view of the river. We will stay there again when the water not flooding it.

Lake Bruin State Park in St. Joseph La (off Hyw65) is beautiful - a small state park and right on the Lake. It is a large lake - called one of the Oxbow lakes since it used to be part of the MS river before the Corp straightened parts of the MS River. Great fishing and beautiful moss-draped Cyprus trees and Cranes and Herons....

I have a brother that lives in Port Gibson, and we always stay at Grand Gulf Military State Park. It's a beautiful little park with museum & lots of interesting artifacts from the Civil War. The Mississippi River is probably a 1/2 mile from the park so you could walk or ride your bike. I will warn you depending on the time of year being right on the river. Mississippi is know for its mosquitos!

We stayed in River View in January. The river level forecasts are done in hundredths of a foot when that close to flood stage. We cut it close yet always felt safe. See http://59sputnik.tumblr.com/page/7

Thanks for all of the info. A REAL help, we appreciate it. Sooooo, we have reservations at River View AND Natchez State Park. We'll cancel the one that looks like one we won't want to stay in once it gets a week or so out.

Really hoping to stay at River View, though.

Thanks again, y'all!

Ameristar Casino, Vicksburg, MS, convenient to I-20 yet nice and quiet. Great place for a quick stopover or for a few days.
