Michigan Upper Peninsula

We are looking for someplace in the Michigan UP to go to in late August.
Any suggestions?

The UP is chock full of places to camp. It depends on what you are looking for.

Muskallonge State Park is nice. It sits on an inland lake and Lake Superior is across the road. Electric only.

Just a bit west of Muskallonge is Lake Superior State Forest CG, which is rustic. We have dry camped there in our 30' LYG MH. All of these sites have direct access to Lake Superior.

A bit further west is Grand Marais County Park, which has water and electric and is within walking distance of the small town of Grand Marais which has a few stores, a market, hardware store, restaurants and a bar. This park is directly on Lk Superior.

I could go on and on. PM me if you would like any more details.

Good luck!

The UP of Michigan is always cooler than down state. Unfortunately, often too cool.

Up

We just returned from Pictured Rocks and it was beautiful. If you can do without power the 12 mile Beach Campground is so beautiful. Also, Bay Furnace outside of Munising was nice. In the Porkies, both campgrounds are good and the hiking is great!

If you go as far north as the Keweenaw penn, don't miss Fort Wilkins SP...the ferry to Isle Royal is close by...but my very favorite spot is an old growth forest located near Copper Harbor/Eagle Harbor. I don't remember the name, but anyone in the area could tell you...We just followed the signs...worth a side trip.

We did a tour of the UP after Metro Detroit last year. Many small road side parks with beach front to stop and spend the day have lunch or supper. No overnight camping at them but plenty of state park camps depending on trailer size.30ft was a little tight and I did some damage not paying attention. On the southern shore we went out on a point with a old light house , the sign at the point said it was the path of the monarch butterfly migration. And as if on cue we started seeing lots of them the whole way back the road. You should be able to google that and find it. If you go when the road starts to turn to dirt there is a parking area , I would park and walk. Took a 3/4 ton truck down the dirt road , mirrors looked to barely clear. There are turn outs if oncoming traffic is encountered. It never would have worked if 2 trucks met. This was not to far east of Rapid River. Headed North and went to Marquette and the east to Whitefish Point to see the Museum that has the bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Those are the 2 memorable sight of the trip.

Definitely do the Keewenaw penninsula if you have time, and visit the Jam Pot - it's run by monks from a monastery started up there about 25 years ago. Delicious jams and other treats. If you're driving up the Penninsula, you won't miss it! There are state forest parks on Lake Michigan around the top of the Lake that are also beautiful - with a trailer the size of yours, you'll fit well.

Be sure to visit the Ship Wreck Museum at Whitefish Point. There is a great hambugger joint in St. Ignas that was highly recommend to us and we ate there twice. We look forward to visiting Michigan again.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. It looks like Keewenaw penninsula is the place that we were looking for.

Thanks for clarifying that.....the thought of what comprises a hambugger was more than disconcerting....

If you're going to the east end. Tuaquamenon (sp) Falls State park is very nice too. Porcupine Mountains is great. There are a lot of beautiful spots all over the UP. It is cool too...almost always. All the spots mentioned above are worth the visit.
