Michigan UP suggestions and "don't miss's"?
Looks like the family is heading to the UP to do some copper mining after the Metro-Detroit Rally.
So, where should we go? Is Mac Island worth it? We are considering returning from the UP via canada down the east side of Lake Huron. Anyone done that?
Just looking for ideas ......

Mackinaw Island is unique and beautiful, will probably be very crowded in the summer. We have never been there in an RV. We first met the UP last summer, loved especially the state parks and the city campgrounds throughout the area as we went 'round, hugging the shoreline. Lake Superior is by far the most beautiful of the lakes, in our opinion, but all of it worth exploring. Travel safe.

Copper Mining, with all the foreclosed homes in the Metro area you should have good copper pipe and wire pickens. LOL

Some places to consider
Porcupine Mountains is a beautiful place to visit, stay and relax. Actually, most of the UP is like that. There’s the Soo locks if you’re interested in them. Watching the big ships go past from one of the campgrounds right on the channel is fun. Pictured Rocks is definitely worth seeing, and worth price of the boat ride. Lots of places to explore up the Kewanee Peninsula as well. Years ago, there was a copper mine that did tours. Not sure if that’s still there or not. If you head up that far north, be sure to find the marker at the beginning of US31 – if it’s still there. I think US41 is the highway that goes up the peninsula now. Anyway, the Soo locks, Pictured Rocks, and Porcupine Mountains will take you all the way across the northern part of the UP. Have a great trip!

Bring lots of bug spray.
Locals wear nets when the 'sqeeters' and black flies are in season.

are you a fish eater? If so don't miss Sault St. Marie. There's a few fresh fish places near the locks and they've got the "token" all you can eat fish dinner. The fish is fresh out of the locks / lake daily. We at 'til we darn near exploded. Andrea and I were up there a few years back on the motorcycle over the 4th of July. We were tent camping in St. Ignace...darn cold even in July. Regardless, the days are nice and the fish is almost worth the 10 hour drive from our house to SSM. The island is OK, the fort is neat. Fudge, well, you're going to Cedar Point this weekend; hit the fudge shop in frontiertown...it doesn't taste any different on the island. Although I think they rip you off just as much. You just don't have to pay for the ferry ride to get it.

Since you asked...
YES Mackinac Island is worth visiting even in the summer. I can give you many details if you want on what to see and do. If you want to stay in the lower penninsula I'd recommend Wilderness State Park's (8 miles west of Mackinaw City) upper loop. From there day trips to the UP (Sioux Locks, Whitefish Point,Tahquamenon Falls) are very do-able.
If you would like to stay in the UP (flies not a factor for you) I'd recommend Tahquamenon Falls State Park or Brimley State Park. Your day trips could then be from there. There are ferries that run from St. Ignes (UP) or Mackinaw City to the island.
Here is a nice site to explore the UP: http://www.exploringthenorth.com/
Have fun in beautiful Michigan!

If you have a couple days, visit NW Michigan. The National Lakeshore and dunes at Glen Arbor are a very relaxing place. Traverse City is a four-season resort town with much to do. Believe there's an Airstream park there. Then up the lake shore toward Mackinac Island, you'll find some nice resort areas such as Elk Rapids, Charlevoix and Petosky with antiques and art galleries. The Old Mill Creek offers a park with tourist attractions. The view of the Mighty Mac bridge at night from the State Park near St. Ignace is great. On the Island there are bicycle rentals, the Grand Hotel and reenactments at the old fort. In the Keweenaw there are a good number of things to see. Calumet is the historic copper mining area where my grandparents lived and worked in the mines. You can tour a giant mine lift, museum and see historic buildings, and don't miss eating pasties at the Hut.

You should have a great trip. Mac island is worth it - take a jet boat to the island, you'll love it. We took the time last August on our way to Winnipeg. As far as traveling down the east side of Lake Huron - Lots of camping areas. Take the Cheecheeman Ferry from Manitoulin Island to Tobermory and then head south. Great campground at Sauble Beach with its 7 miles of white sand. Carson's Campground has all amenities and you can walk to the beach. You can then travel highway 21 south to make your way toward Sarnia & Port Huron. The views are wonderful right around the lake with lots of areas to stop and enjoy. Have a safe journey.

da U.P. rocks!
Wherever there are waterfalls! We tent camped the UP in 1988, after which our daughter recognized that we stayed at locations that had waterfalls.
I can't figure out which was #1, 2 or 3 to me. In the order we traveled:
1. Munising up to Grand Marais
2. Tahquamenon Falls
3. Indian Springs - Fayette historical park (don't miss the spring lake with the huge trout)

I missed the Porkies -- we had a super campsite right on the limestone rock shore. And Lake Gogebic was tranquil -- loons in the night.

Grand Marais
There is a wonderful little municipal park that offers camping. It was on the water, was inexpensive for the great scenic views, and had amenities! We visited in Aug. and it was not at all crowded.

Plus, there is a great provincial park on Lake Huron near Grand Bend called "The Pinery" if you have time and can get in. Wr used to live for four years nearby at Sarnia on the Canadian side across from Port Huron, Michigan.

We have traveled up the west side of Michigan and currently in Petoskey but leaving tomorrow for the Mackinaw City area. From there we are making our way to Madison. This part of Michigan is beautiful. We have found the State Parks are more expensive than other States we have visited. Fuel prices are soaring. Diesel today is 3.69 and we were paying 3.12 a week ago in Indiana.

All the suggestions listed have been great for us. We visited Whitefish Point (Shipwreck Museum) and Tahquamenon Falls today. Yes, the mesquotes at the lower falls were out in full force. The SOO locks were great as was our trip over to Mackinac Island. Great hambugers at Clyde's in St. Ignace.

So glad you enjoyed your UPer activities! Are you still eating fudge from the island?
