Hi, there is nothing in Mexico that interests me. I have no want or need to go there, ever. And for several decades, I have been saying, "The Twenty Mule Team couldn't drag me across that border." It's so crappy down there and so beautiful in Canada; Go North young man, go North.

So if you really want to go, if you're stopped by the federally and they want 100 fee/ticket/permit, they're talking peso's, NOT DOLLARS. If you give them dollars, they'll think you're drug dealers. Don't ask how I know. You do know the difference between a federally and the regular police?

Well, if you go North, there are gang problems as well - early Sunday morning, 10 people were shot, several in serious condition, in front of a Vancouver, BC restaurant. The restaurant is located on a main street, Oak, near downtown. Police said it was gang related & tied to a "hit" that occurred earlier this year.

This kind of violence is erupting anywhere there is an erosion of the middle class, corruption, greed, consumers who buy the drugs, a lack of respect for one's fellow humans . . .

More then 28,000 have died from drug violence in Mexico since 2006. Not a good comparison to the USA or Canada, or even Afghanistan for that matter.

some stats

The Facts Concerning Violent Crimes Committed Against US Tourists in Mexico

This is an interesting article with some stats for violent crime against Americans in Mexico, admittedly written by a real estate broker in Puerto Vallarta using stats from various government agencies. The short version of his research is:
Of the roughly 20 million Americans visiting Mexico annually, about 50 die from violent crime.
The annual crime rate for America, per 20 million people, is roughly 1,200 deaths from violent crime.
When you take into account the fact that the vast majority of Americans travel either by plane or cruiseship, thus avoiding the dangers of driving through the border states, these stats don't really answer the question posed in this thread. But I think stats like these are a useful tool in trying to determine the overall risk of travel in Mexico.
Another website I visited gives the overall annual murder rate of the Yucatan as 2 per 100,000, comparable to the rates for Wyoming or Montana. Compare this to Mexico City at 8 per 100,000, and Washington D.C. at 31 per 100,000.
Do your own research before ANY travel, and then take your chances.
I personally would still avoid driving a shiney fixed-up Airstream through the known dangerous areas of the northern Mexican states.

Those stats were from 2006 to 2008. The violence has really ramped up since then.

When traveling abroad it's always a good idea to check the US State Department website for warnings and advice. Good luck.

Because that's what we do. Why do you need to ask why we go in the wrong direction?

Mexico should be of concern to all of us. If you are interested, take a moment to read John Grassby's briefing paper on this subject:

http://www.northamericanmediation.co...b-10%20_2_.pdf

I think he does a pretty credible job of laying it out.
