We live in San Carlos, Sonora. Currently we travel by boat but have traveled in various Rv's for tens of thousands of miles in country and have visited all but two of the Mexican states by rv.
We find the country safe from violence. Incidents of road rage are virtually non existent as are school and workplace shootings. It is not in the Mexican culture.
Handguns are illegal. If you bring yours across and they catch you, you will spend time in the slammer. The only people that have them are the cops and narcos. The latter shoot each other and the cops but don't target gringos as that brings law enforcement down on them with a vengeance.
The roads are not up to U.S. standards. Make sure your rig is in top condition. I have had lots of tire trouble with ST tires, I recommend upgrading to LT tires of the appropriate load range, particularly in hot weather.
The road down the Baja is narrow, curvy, rutted and trafficked by heavy trucks and busses. It is passable but slowly and carefully in the day time.
We always stay in places that have some kind of security, not always a campground but sometimes in a 24 hour Pemex if there is nothing else. Some camp on remote beaches without trouble but where have never done it. We stay in remote locations on the boat but there is no road close by.
The book by Dwight and Terre Church is indispensable. Be sure and get the latest edition available on the internet.
It helps to speak a bit of Spanish--enough to ask for directions, say fillerup and can I camp here.
Petty fraud at gas stations is common. Don't use credit cards as your identity will likely be stolen and watch the fueling process to avoid being cheated. There are no self service gas stations.
No more rv cars on the Copper Canyon trip. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't take the trip. Leave your r.v. in a secure location in El Fuerte or Los Mochis and ride up to the top, stay a day and ride back.
Last, at least double your estimate of time for making the trip. You are not going to make close to 500 miles a day and you want to have time to stay a few days if you like the place.
Our neighbors from Canada seem to be more adventurous travelers than we are. There are lots of Canadians here in various r.v.s as well as a surprising number of Germans and other Europeans who pay large amounts to ship their rvs from home.
Don't be dissuaded from coming to Mexico by tall tales of what happened to a friend of somebodies brother in law told by someone who has never visited. Most of those who come here enjoy the trip and return.

I saw your tag and I tagged. The Rand McNally gang, large presence at the Balloon Fiesta. Pat was telling me about his trip to Mexico (Sea of Cortez) this past May. Sounds like fun. A big hug to Dorothy from you two. Take care and travel safe.

What is the purpose of "tagging in"? I don't think I've seen that in other threads.

People tag in so they get notice when anyone posts to this thread. It normally happens when they are interested in the thread subject.... Beyond the email notices, one can also find this thread again as its in ones subscriptions....

Thanks Pat - May is getting really late for us as we will be back in Canada by then. Is there a reason you go that time of year compared to say Feb or March?

Cheers
Doug

Rocky Point sounds great. Please keep me informed regarding the dates. We are to visit DW's sister in FL April. I'll have to schedule FL around Rocky Point.

There is no definite destinations yet, but to me Rocky Point seems too commercial and touristy. I am looking for all suggestions. So far La Paz sounds good, but that is a farther trip.

Thanks. I wondered if it was something like that, but one can subscribe to a thread and get email notifications without posting to it.

Lunatic: No real issues taking a trailer down the Baja. About 1,000 mile trip from San Diego all the way down to Cabo San Lucas. The roads are quite unforgiving as there are few pull outs and usually no shoulders. I do not consider the Baja dangerous but the Mexican drivers are terrible although the truck drivers are quite good and polite. On occasion the local police will stop a gringo and for the most part it is just easier to pay them off. Do not give them your license and do not carry all of your money in your wallet. Make it clear that you have very little cash. That way your bribe can be much smaller. There are several RV parks but only a few were appealing. As I said before down by Loreto there are several areas where one can park right on the beach. Don;t drive at night and don't stretch your fuel tank as there are stretches of road where fuel is not available.

A couple of other informative sources-
On the road in Mexico by Dorthy and Bill Bell who sell Road Logs for traveling in Mexico-- They are helpful navigating.
The Peoples Guide to Mexico is an entertaining and insightful look at the cultural clashes.
