We have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and it covers it in Canada. Last year we went to Spain and it covered us in Europe too.

I'd rather have treatment in Canada at one of their large medical centers you find even in small cities than cross into the US where you may only find a clinic or small and not so good hospital. We have a friend in Victoria who is a doctor, but he is an anesthesiologist and can only put me to sleep. I don't know whether sleeping it off is the best treatment.

I look forward to reading the fine print on a short term policy for about 10 days on Vancouver Is.

We have Medicare Advantage plans from the Providence system here in Oregon, and they cover urgent and/ or emergency care in Canada.

Check with your credit card. My Visa offers personal travel health insurance coverage.

When we travel internationally with the kids we buy supplemental insurance. It's not all that expensive.

OK, after a fair amount of research today I purchased a medical insurance policy from ING. The division of ING that sells international travel medical insurance is Patriot Medical Insurance. Like all insurance I hope that I will never use it but at least I feel comfortable knowing that when I leave the U. S. that I have medical insurance.

Medical Insurance In Canada

Always travel with travel health insurance it's not too expensive but not having it will be devastating... Some employers have travel coverage both hubby and I have it through work but we always purchase for our kids....you can get it just for the 2 weeks you are in Canada so it won't be expensive hopefully! Enjoy visiting us In the great white north!

For those still working who have insurance through their work, check with your carrier before paying for out of country health insurance. My son and his fellow workers won a promotion which was funded by an outside source. The prize was an all expense paid trip to London which includes airfare and lodging. He called Blue Cross Anthem and they informed him that even though he is not traveling on company business, he is covered where ever he is, with the same level of care as if he was in the US. There was also a link on their web site for different countries and cities showing where obtain care.

So before you buy, call your carrier to check. It might save you a few $$.

We purchased a medical insurance policy to cover us on our upcoming trip to Canada from IMG (International Medical Group). We did a fair amount of research although we found that there are not a lot of companies offering medical coverage for international travel. I hope that we don't need to find out if this is a good policy or not! Hope that our research helps fellow AS travelers traveling outside of the U.S.

While on the caravan with Bill and Ed in the Canadian Maritimes, I was seen at a small clinic. I paid CAD $75 to the physician's office and CAD $82 at a pharmacy. Had I gone into the hospital, the expenses would have been ten times as great, just for bronchitis. After I got home, I filed with my supplemental insurance company, which will pay 90% of my out-of-pocket expenses. So the moral of the story is, get a supplemental policy to cover you and your family while traveling outside the USA. Best wishes to all.

Curious, I have Tricare Prime. Wondering if anyone else with Tricare has done any traveling out of the U.S. and needed medical attention. I would not expect Tricare to be excepted outside US. Question is about dealing with Tricare on return about getting refunded for medical expenses incurred out of country.

Overseas, your Tricare Prime reverts to Tricare Standard. If you incur covered expenses, you submit a standard claim (the form is on the website).
