I think what they need to do is change their fee structure, so RV / Trailer sites cost more than tent sites - to discourage that Prius owner or backpacker from taking one of the scarce RV sites. Or even better, restrict it so you can only camp in an RV spot if you've got an RV / trailer.

It's absolutely frustrating to see this in action at Yosemite - last year we were trying to stay in Tuolumne Meadows, which is half reserved and half first come first serve and there were multiple cases of pup tents in the RV / trailer spaces. RV spots are super scarce up there - there are like 300 tent spots and only about 10 RV spots - and we were turned away - even though there were plenty of tent sites open.

I would love to have designated RV spots. They already have some designated "tent only" spots. The majority of campers at Upper Pines last weekend were RVs, so it's unlikely that empty RV spots would keep tents from being able to camp. Some sites could remain either/or.

I would think it would be nicer for the tents to have the RVs in a separate area. When I've been tent camping, I'm always dismayed when an RV with a generator takes the spot next to me.

Mount Rainier National Park has a "no generators" loop. It doesn't keep all the RVs out - we parked there because we have solar and we prefer the peace - but it helps to encourage the tents to cluster and leave the RV spaces for the RVs.

This is great! The only thing I can think of that would have changed in that time is tree growth. It's not like they've been redesigning Upper Pines in the past few decades. Some sites in Lower Pines were removed permanently after the last big flood, but Upper Pines seems to have the same layout it always did.

We saw this happen last year, at the South Campground at Zion NP. It's first-come, first serve, with rigs lining up at the entrance by 9:00 am;and some guy with a pocket tent and an ancient sub-compact bagged one of the monster pull-throughs. Fortunately we also got a nice site, but my thought was that if the CG filled up before we found a site, we could offer to pay his CG fee if he'd just move back slightly and let us use the rest of the space.

Looking from the opposite side of the fence, we were tent campers for many years, and it got us into some amazing places where you couldn't take a trailer or motor home. As RVs became more popular, and more campsites got paved or graveled over, however, it became difficult in some park campgrounds to find a good level place for a tent.

Ahhhh, Bambi!

Just for fun...
I went thru all 58 National Parks NPS Site and looked for length restrictions....I have listed the Maximum Restriction I could find for that park. Some campsites obviously may not have sites that long, but somewhere in the park, they limit you to the listed length.

I'm not sure I'd call it a 'resource', it's more of a impulse post that went badly wrong...

I suggest if anyone is aware of errors, post them!
