270, 15, 81, 84, 87. 90 avoids most of the traffic. We liked Woodland Hills in Austerlitz.

I'd modify that and say stay on 84 all the way to 90.

Agreed on 84 to 90. Then 495 around Boston to 95. Do not get any closer to NY than I-84. 15 is not an interstate but is a nice 4 lane highway and a easy drive through beautiful country. Enjoy, we just returned from Acadia NP. Hard to beat summer in Maine.

Ditto on avoiding NYC and taking I-84 to the Mass. Pike I-90. I-495 is a good loop around Boston, but we usually cut north on I-290 a little east of Sturbridge (at Auburn) to avoid the 90/495 intersection which can get crowded. The downside of 290 is that the Worcester area can also be crowded and slow during rush hours. Either way is OK and you can check the traffic ahead on most Apps, before choosing.

Definitely want to avoid rush hours near Boston. For that matter "rush hour" becomes more like "rush days" as you head north to Maine. Fridays and Sundays can have crazy afternoon traffic with people heading to the coast (incl. all three MA/NH/ME coasts).

Have fun!

PS -- And welcome to the forum.
