Maine Trip Next Fall

We live on Maryland's Eastern Shore and are planning a trip to Maine in September. Any recommendations on trip planning? We'd like to stay away from NYC and environs.

Acadia of course but we enjoyed Schoodic Woods CG on Schoodic Penisula as well. Also Campo Bello was also very enjoyable (Herring SP).

Consider skirting NYC by going through the Hudson Valley up towards Albany...very pretty country. Cut over towards the coast on I-90, then north to Maine. Many alternatives to driving through NYC, but there will be traffic congestion. Winter Harbor, ME is a personal favorite...will be going back next August.

Blueberry Pie in Machias: lunch at the Bluebird Restaurant (you will be there with real Mainers) for grilled cheese sandwich and blueberry pie, then dinner across the street at Helen's (you will be there with real Mainers and tourists) for lobster and blueberry pie. Both pies are a bit different but each very nice so the contrast is nice to experience. And, I like Helen's lazy man lobster...I am a lazy man. Regardless ask about blueberry pie and order ahead of time as they do run out in season.

If you are lucky enough to be there late July and early August when the fresh blueberry pie is on - do that at Helen's....a rat load of fresh blueberries with whipped cream in a pie. (they are a super food so the whipped cream is negated making it a health food.)

Easy parking while towing a trailer at the boat ramp just past Helen's going north or along the bridge to walk to both the Blue Bird and Helen's. And if you want to stay in a hotel the one behind Helen's is clean and nice with a back view of the river and its tidal swings.

And on the way stop at Wild Blueberry Land in Addison and if you are lucky enough to see Marie or Dell tell them Cornell Bob sent you. Dell was the head of the Maine wild blueberry experiment station for like 25 years...they love them and will spend all the time with you to let you know the benefits of the berries.
I love Machias and the Lubec area. Bonus is driving range to Acadia at a lower price...except for the drive time.

We have visited Maine with Lucy (our Airstream) on a number of occasions. Two of our favorites are Baxter State Park in the center of the state and Lubec on the coast, the furthest east point in the Continental United Sates. We plan to be in Maine again next summer.

I agree with visiting Lubec. And that puts Machias and Helen's and Blue Bird in range. One for lunch on the way out, one for dinner on the way back.

We say go to Lubec Maine and stay at Sunset Point RV. (Make reservations). Eat at Franks dock side cafe and have pancake with real Maine blueberrys, drive across the bridge into Canada on Campobello and see FDR’s summer home and have tea with Eleanor great. Drive over to the lighthouse at Quoddy Head Park, watch the tide change at the RV park about 20 to 25 feet. Shop in Eastport eat Lobster Roll on the dock where they unload the lobsters. Very nice folks
