No, you don't This has been covered a number of times on other threads. In fact, you want to avoid DC and NYC like the plague. Go west and north, then cut across in Mass.

Ditto -- avoid the Washington DC and the NYC metropolitan areas. There are easier and more relaxing ways to trailer north to Maine from Georgia. (Or will you be on the road some other place first?) Recommended routes would depend on knowing this.

And welcome to the forum!

Peter

PS -- Edit
-- I see that Pooler is near Savannah.
-- What is your time frame?
-- Would you prefer being near the Appalachian Mountains (I-81), or on the coast for great salt-water views and places to stop?
-- Are you open to taking large ferry boats once in a while to stay on the coast? The cost incl. trailer is higher, but this approach often avoids many miles of road time, plus it includes a boat ride which is often relaxing and a good break from driving.
-- Any other parameters perhaps?

We just came back from an Airstream trip to Maine. We have traveled to Maine 7 or 8 times in the last ten years. We have always tried to avoid the Washington, DC, New York City, Boston corridor. We make this trip from Florida. We follow a western route through Scranton, PA and up through Binghamton New York. We cut east north of Boston.

Several years ago, we stopped to see friends in Parsippany, New Jersey. This brought us into the dreaded New York City corridor. We will try not to do this again. That whole area is not trailer friendly.

My best advice is, unless you have to visit New York City, avoid the stress.

Brian

Actually, it just occurred to me that maybe you meant it when you said,
"We . . . will have to travel through DC and NYC?"

If you will be going into the center of each city, that opens up other possibilities, which can also be exciting and fun. Please let us know, as there is no shortage of advice here!

Thanks,

Peter

We live in Midcoast Maine. Boothbay Harbor is a great place to visit if you want to see a working lobster and fishing harbor. It gets quite busy in the summer with tourists, but calms down in the Fall. There's a nice campground here, Shore Hills, and plenty of things to do and see. If you're coming to eat lobster, this is the place. We're 12 miles south of US 1, the coastal route.
Of course, no trip to Maine should leave out Acadia National Park. It's a beautiful place and gets better in the Fall as it isn't so crowded.
Have a fun trip.

We have family in Stoneington Maine. Very nice. Also, don't forget about Arcadia National Park and Barharbor. There is lots of great campgrounds near the national park.

KOA has one that's right on the water.

I agree! go around DC and NYC. We always go NH, VT, PENN. down staying well west of the coast until Virginia.

We went to Maine last fall. I would avoid the I-95 route. Regretfully, I've done that route a few times. It only takes an hour more to take the western route, if I-95 traffic is flowing perfectly. Odds are I-95 will have some delays.

I would take one of the western routes into PA to the Scranton area. Then go east into NY and CT on I-84.

Yup. And while in Maine, go to the Rangley Lakes Region.

We stopped at Rangley Lake State Park for a week on the way back from Canada last summer. No hookups. But a very nice park on the lake, rental canoes. Enjoyed it. Also like Arcadia and Buckport but we had done those a few times.
We go up I81 and often end up spending a night at Honesdale KOA in PA and then drive around west and north of NYC the next day.

The Gumball Rally - Do NYC early on a Sunday morning. Stay away from the construction zones. Do not take the Jag. Mostly, watch for unmarked cars.

No clue how you would get through DC. Scout Troop made three turns around a traffic circle trying to get to the other side on the DC tour. But, but, but it's a great place. Maybe worth the trip to see, if you can get out of the traffic circle.

Maine - not sure it's worth the trip. Beautiful coast, but those roads are terrible. We did enjoy the Maine Wild Blue Berries. Yes, the pie was great. We'd do the pie again. Liked the coast above Bar Harbor. That's where we found the pie. It's also quiet, reserved, and scenic as well as it's rumored that there are lobsters somewhere in the area.

Good luck with your trip. Pat

For DC, your best two options IMHO are either west of the city at the county park at Bull Run Regional in Centreville (URL https://www.novaparks.com/ ) or the private Cherry Hill RV Park on the MD side of the river (URL https://www.cherryhillpark.com )

In New York, most people know of Liberty Harbor (glorified, expensive parking lot (but with ammenities) at URL www.libertyharborrv.com/ -- but I made a boondocking park discovery the other year I was VERY happy with, at Floyd Bennet Field (URL https://www.nps.gov/gate/learn/histo...nett-field.htm )

Enjoy both cities! They are well worth the time and trips there.

Thanks for the heads up on Floyd Bennett Field NPS. There appear to be only 9 RV sites, with showers available 9-2 through October:

https://www.nps.gov/gate/planyourvisit/fees.htm

$30 per night -- less if you have the Access or Senior Pass etc.. No hookups and no mention of a dump station, so I assume there is none.

This one campsite image shows quite a bit of greenery (at a tent site?)!

Thanks again for the heads up.

Acadia

Once you get to Maine, check out Acadia National Park. It's really nice
