Maiden Voyage in the Land Yacht includes visit to Top of Georgia

We have just returned from our maiden voyage. We stayed at the Appalachian Campground in Hiawassee, GA. The campground was small with only 20 sites and a creek that ran directly behind the Airstream. This area is absolutely beautiful. We were able to visit Top of Georgia Airstream Park. The Host for the week was from SC. You could not ask for anyone to be any more friendly and helpful. We drove through the park and enjoyed seeing ALL of the different Airstreams. We can't wait to get our membership completed and submitted to WBCCI so we can stay at Top of Georgia on our next outing.

Oops, the pics came out sideways, or my eyes are getting worse than I thought. Thanks Steve and Sue, we are very proud of it, we had been looking for close to a year! Top of Georgia is the absolute best, all of the Airstreamers there were extremely friendly. We can hardly wait to camp there!

Hiawassee is a nice area. I was looking at their web sight and could not find an address. Looks like you had fun. There is alot to do in that area.

Hi Perry,

Appalachian Campground is very informal. I couldn't find the address on their site either so I looked it up on yellowpages.com. It sits right in the center of Hiawassee and Helen (10 miles either direction). The only draw back is if you have Verizon cell phone service it does not work there. All of the campsites are shady which will be great during the summer. They have horseshoes and a net to play badminton or volleyball. The bath house is very rustic but better that some I have seen. We enjoyed it very much.

Kevin,

We couldn't have asked for the weather to have been any better, Only turned the A/C on one afternoon. Cool mornings and evenings, really needed the portable heater.

Looks like a great time. We took our AS out on its maiden voyage to a local state park this weekend and had a wonderful time.

Ok I think this is it. It looks pretty remote. How are the roads getting in and out of there? My folks use to have a place in Blairsville, GA. I use to do alot of hiking there and some backpacking on the AT as well. Helen was a little too touristy for me and that was 15 years or so ago. The view on Google earth shows quite a few Airstreams.

We camped at Appalachian campground. We knew of Top of Georgia, an Airstream only park, but was unaware we were this close. It was about 8-10 miles from us towards Helen. We drove up on Saturday and visited the camp ground, the camp ground host from South Carolina was extremely friendly and very helpful with some questions I had. He provided us with a membership package for WBCCI, we can hardly wait to complete our membership and return to Top of Georgia, such a beautiful place!

Congratulations! We made our maiden voyage recently to a local campground called Hueston Woods near the Ohio/Indiana state line. Didn't have any luck finding any other Airstreams but it was a very clean, nice campground with a lake for fishing. There is also a new covered bridge nearby!

We just returned from Top Of Airstream Park GA. It is a great park for a base camp to see so much of the area. We were not members and were still allowed to stay there. Members are charged $10.00 a night and non members $15.00 a night. What's not to like. Every one was so friendly. I think my son counted 64 Airstreams one day we were there but there was still plenty of room for lots more. If you have children definitely ride the tubes on the river in Helen. We traveled about a hour to Tallulah Gorge from the park and had a amazing day hiking into the gorge and going down the sliding rock and hiking back out. Definitely challenging but it was the highlight of our 17 day trip.
