It can be mooses or moosies, whichever you prefer, it's all good. Spell-check isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Several years ago while traveling from Sheridan to Cody, we drove through the Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang preserve. It is east of Lovell. Don't know if guys will venture to the north end of the Big Horns but if you do, it might be worth the drive out there. We were there in the summer and the roads are dirt and gravel so don' know about the condition this time of year. The herds of wild horses were really something to see as well as a lot of other wildlife. The preserve is on BLM land and there is a lot of info on the internet about it.
Thanx for the tip. We will put that on our list as we do plan to head up to the north end of the Forest later this week. We are planning to camp for several days at Ranchester.

I call it an ice house because the winter has been the only time I've felt it was worth photographing...and I've taken a bunch of photos there also.

As stated earlier, thanks for taking us along on your journey!
There's a cute story that goes with the Ten Sleep falling down barn photo in our post. We pulled off of the road to take that picture. We thought that it was a nice extra that the five horses posed for us in front of the barn. Right after that picture was snapped, all five of those horses came running over to the fence right next to our truck. They were obviously looking for a fee for their photo performance. They were clearly disappointed that we had nothing to give them. They all looked really sad.

When we got back to Buffalo last night, we bought a bag of apple for such encounters.

The fifth photo in our post is of Meadowlark Lake, and as you can see, it is still mostly frozen. We were also down at the lake shore, and it is starting to thaw. Up at the higher elevations along US 16 yesterday afternoon, it was 31 degrees.

The word "moose" came to us from Algonquian Indians. Consequently its plural, instead of being "mooses" or "meese", is the same as the singular. That is true of most Indian names whether of a tribe, such as the Winnebago and Potawatomi, or of an object such as papoose. It is also true of many wildlife names not of Indian origin -- for example: deer, mink and grouse.

Yes Gene, I have noticed that also, and I have been meaning to talk to the spell checker people about that. Using the term Mooses came about when SuEllyn started Moose Tags. It started as a little levity, but has become our regular term for more than one Moose.

That's right, Maggie, the Forums spell checker obviously needs to be updated.

When we camped at the foot of the Brook's Range in 2002, there was a footprint behind our tent that was enormous. This BLM CG (Marion Creek) is the furthest north with a host. I asked the host what animal left that and he said is was a moose. We had camped right on a moose's trail. In some cases moose's is correct.

Brian and SuEllyn,
Thanks for sharing your adventure up to Wyoming...we are headed up to Yellowstone within the month..staying at Cody at the YVI with the in-laws and my wife's side of the family for my in-law's 50th wedding anniversary. This is our first big trip with the Airstream (we are headed to South Padre Island for our "shakedown cruise" over the Memorial Day weekend) and were wondering your thoughts on which route is best for getting to Cody? I'm thinking 20/26 to 120 would be the best route...but not sure. Any advice?

Happy and safe travels!
Paul

Your route sounds real good. I would highly suggest that you avoid towing the Airstream from Sheridan to Cody via US 14. This is a rough trip pulling a trailer.

If you overnight in Roswell, I would highly recommend the Red Barn Campground at 2806 E. 2nd Street in Roswell (325-672-3681). It's close to town, family owned and operated, and has five point hook-ups. We spent three nights there in May of 2009.

Lucy is still camped at Buffalo, Wyoming.

We ventured into the Bighorn National Forest today. It was raining and/or snowing pretty much all day. As a matter of fact I can hear a pretty steady rain on Lucy's roof as I write this at 9:30 PM. It sure is good to be snuggled in at home in Lucy on a night like this.

The Mooses were scarce in the Forest today. We only saw one retreating into the woods. We tried to take a look at some of the Forest Service Campgrounds, except none are yet open. We also went to check out the RV Dump Station at Leigh Creek. See the photo of it below.

We came back to town early, got some stuff at the IGA, and came back to Lucy to settle in for the night.
