Hey you are about an hour from me at this point (I'm near Port Jervis, NY) if you are heading east on Rt 84. The Lake Placid area is beautiful. There's a great state campground on Rt 21 out of Wilmington iirc.
Bob just got in from a yard tour -- evidence of a moose crossing through the back yard last night -- not a bull, indentations in ground were only 4" across.
Moosetags, We live in Maine just 6 miles east of route 16. The black flies are just appearing now. They are not pesky enough yet to do the "Maine wave". There is still lots of snow on mount washington above the tree line. The mountain is pretty much solid white. Dolly Copp is a a fairly high elevation and probably has some snow left in the woods. You could call the Appalachain mountain club and ask them about snow conditions, and you can phone the Mount Washington Auto Road Company and ask. A few years ago they were running some vans up the mountain in winter equipped with tracks (catapiller). We are at low elevation here and our snow has been gone for about 3 weeks. Have a great trip. Oh about your batteries, we served as camp host several years ago in a park with no power. Every night we hooked up a direct jumper cable from car battery to trailer battery(only one) and battery never went down over 10 week period. Charlie E.
Going to the coast of Maine you really have to go to a lobster pound and get them right off the boat with the boiling water at the ready in the AS. Way memorable experience!
..............
We've altered our plans slightly to give Maine a little more time to thaw out.
We are going to head from here to Lake Placid, New York for a couple of days.
...................
When heading anywhere in New England, New Hampshire is the place to shop.
I prefer Manchester to buy anything big but if you drink beer or buy just about anything other than food, do it in New Hampshire.
PA, NY, MA and ME are all big sales tax states.
Heck, Maine is number 1 in the nation IN TAXES!

We got on the road from the Petro at about in the pouring rain. The rain finally quit but it stayed cloudy most of the day. We drove north into New York, and got off the interstate. We had a pleasant afternoon driving through the New York countryside.
We decided to go spend a few days in the Lake Placid area. We got a campsite at the KOA in Wilmington, New York. We got there about 7PM.

Since you are n the area, you might want to consider a visit to Fort Ticonderoga. I visited it many years ago and was impressed by the show that they put on. They have a spectacular flower garden, but it might be too early in the season for that.
We spent the day touring the Lake Placid, New York area. It's was pretty neat see some of the Olymic history from the 1980 and 1932 Winter Olympics. There are not many tourists here yet. Some of the attractions are not open yet.
We got some really nice steaks from the local supermarket and brought them back to Lucy for a very nice evening at the campground.

Happy Mothers' Day!! to all those great Mothers out there.
We are still at the KOA near Lake Placid, New York. It's a beautiful bright sunny day. We went out and spent the day touring the Saranac Lake area. We found the neatest restaurant in a little town called Ray Brook, New York. It is called Tail o' the Pup. They call Lobsters "pups" around here. SuEllyn had to partake of one of the "pups". It made for a very nice Mothers' Day Dinner.
We checked out several of the local lakes for Kayaking. They looked good, but the water is still really cold, so Violet (our Kayak) remained on Olivia's roof rack.
Back at the KOA, it's like a ghost town. There are only about ten campers here tonight.

Days 10 and 11 (Monday and Tuesday, May 12 and 13, 2008)
We have been out of internet touch for the last couple of days.
Monday afternoon we arrived at Cupsuptic Lake Campground in Oquossoc, Maine. We got a campsite directly on the lake. We were the only campers there. They don't get many campers before Memorial Day.
We spent Monday evening Moose hunting. We had six separate sightings along Highway, a very successful evening.
Tuesday morning, we took a ride over to Rangely Lake to take a look around. Tuesday evening we continued looking for Mooses. We had seven sightings.
Wednesday morning we departed Oquossoc enroute to Medway, Maine, near Baxter State Park. We got real nice campsight at Katahdin Shadows Campground in Medway. After we set-up Lucy, we hit the back logging road outside of Millinocket. We spotted six more Mooses in two hour period around dusk. The Maine Mooses have been indeed plentiful thusfar.
Tomorrow is the opening day at Baxter State Park. We plan to be there looking for their Mooses.
