I'm intrigued by the snow yacht. Do they drive it year round and on pavement or does it sit there 'till the next big snow?

I don't know the answer to that. I always saw it in that same spot. It does have rubber tracks, and could operate on dry pavement or dirt. Here's another angle that shows the tracks better.

Day 18 - May 31, 2007

We are still in Butte. We lounged around and got Olivia a bath.

This afternoon we toured Historic Uptown Butte. We were amazed with the number of historic biuldings (both commercial and residential) still in use in this town. Many of these buildings are architecturally significant. We have seen so many in one place. We spent several hours driving the streets of the historic district, and took over 100 pictures. I have posted a sampling of these. We would highly suggest seeing the Butte Historic Ditrict if you ever happen through here.

I think I heard that next year's International Rally was scheduled for Butte. This would be good to see.

I spent some youthful and somewhat "lost" weekends in Butte but we were more interested in the new and fresh things at the time. It is a pretty place and I appreciate your reminding me of that. Port Townsend, WA, has quite a few buildings of similar years and they have also worked to keep them in place and treasured for what they are.

Am enjoying your travellog, thanks,

Barry

Thanks for the travel report. We are starting on June 13th from NC and headed to Northern CA via Route 2 across the northern USA. So keep it up as we will also be going to some of the same sites.

On the way back, we plan to visit the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Then it's on to Mitchell, South Dakota, to see the Corn Palace. From there, we're not sure what else we will do or where else we might go.

Day 19 - June 1, 2007

Today is Lucy's First Birthday. We took delivery of her one yaer ago today. We have spent 121 nights in her, and covered more than 16,000 miles since we have had her. We got her a cake and celebrated when we made camp tonight.

We broke camp at the Butte KOA (photo 1) this morning and headed out west on I-90. We decided to take the Pintler Scenic Loop via Montana State Road 1. Our first treat along this route was the world's largest smoke stack (that's what the road sign said) near Anaconda, Montana (photo 2). As we continued along Montana 1, we came upon a rather slow moving old Jeep pick-up. As we drew closer, we realized that what we had thought were three prople in the Jeep were a lady driving with her two large canine companions, both of whom were sitting as people in the truck (photo 3).

We stopped and walked aroung Phillipsburg. This is a really cute little town. It had a number of significant commercial buildings (photos 4 and 5). We continued on through some really beautiful country along Flathead Lake. We arrived at the KOA in West Glacier in the late afternoon. This is a really nice campground. We got set up and even put out the lighted flamingos, Fred and Ethel, in honor Lucy's Birthday (photo 6).

We enjoy visiting caves. We thought that the Wind Caves near Mount Rushmore was one of the best we have visited.

We heard about Tropical storm Barry in the Gulf and thought, "oh great", here it is the very first day of the storm season, and there's one in the Gulf already. But then I thought, what the heck, we've already evacuated to Montana, so we should be safe. It would sure be nice to get some rain in the Panhandle without it having to be from a hurricane.

We have really enjoyed your travel reports. We are leaving tomorrow morning to go to Yellowstone but we don't have our AS yet so we will be roughing in in hotels. If you are in western S. Dakota, you may want to consider going over into Wyoming to visit the Devil's Tower. We were there a couple years ago and thought it was well worth the time.
Our next trip should be in Lucy's twin. Be safe.

In 2000 we were in Rapid City and Custer SD with three grand kids in tow (5, 6 and 8. We headed back to Texas after traveling 5 weeks on basically your same route(Yellowstone, Butte and Glacier). On Route US 385 we stopped at Hot Springs SD at a mammoth dig site. We were lucky to be there in July when the workers were excavating. It was a very interesting stop. It would be an easy day trip from Mt Rushmore area.

I am enjoying you posts and revisiting the places we saw in 2000. Wish we could go back again and see the things that we missed on the 1st trip around. There were lots of museums that we just didn't have time to see.

I am so glad to know that others are traveling around and seeing this wonderful country of ours. Take care and enjoy

Kay and Roy

I highly recommend stopping at the site of Custer's Last Stand on your way back east. It is an extremely moving experience.

Some more tips: IF you go to Devil's Tower after or on the way to Rushmore, I'd recommend staying overnight at the DT KOA. We don't usually find KOA's to recommend, but the nice thing about this one is that you are camping nearly at the foot of the tower, along the river that runs by it. The tower looms over the area-a nice effect, especially since the camp hosts show Close Encounters of the Third Kind on an outdoor screen after dark. Kids love it. Devil's Tower is an impressive place to visit with special significance to Native Americans. When we were there in late afternoon, a group with some in tribal ceremonial dress were dancing, ascending the path, siinging and placing momentos along the way--undisturbed by and right through the throngs of other visitors. This was simply haunting to us. Another suggestion: if you are near Cody, WY: do stop for a leisurely visit at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. This is considered by many to be America's finest Western museum. In fact, it is made up of several "museums," each of which is a marvel of its own: the Whitney Gallery of Western Art, the Plains Indian Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum, and the Buffalo Bill Museum. It's not to be missed if you are in the area! Wish we could head out there again right now. ~G

Seconding the visit to the Little Bighorn/Custer's. . . we also thought this was a moving place to visit-and visually spectacular as you gaze out over the surrounding country. When we visited, a hot hot day, a prairie storm approached from the west, first a breeze, then wind, swirling dark storm clouds, hail, driving rain, and then it passed, leaving behind cooled air full of the sweetest scent of sage. In addition to the history there, I'll never forget the sight, feeling, and scents of that place. Do go! !G
