We are now headed in the general direction of the Florida Panhandle, But first we get to drive through the Oklahoma Panhandle. We are headed that way to visit an old friend in Enid, Oklahoma.

Day 35 - June 17, 2007

We broke camp at North Platte, Nebraska, and headed south on US 83. The road was really in good shape, and there was very little traffic. We took the time to tour several of the little towns along the way. We stopped at McCook, Nebraska, and Oberlin, Oakley, Scott City, and Garden City, Kansas. They were all nice, but McCook, Nebraska was the neatest. We stopped there for lunch, and ate in their beautiful Bandshell Park. Acouple of the picture we took today are views out Lucy's door. We saw lots and lots of wheat and feed lots. It's really nice to be far away from the Interstate for a change.

We have stopped for the night at a small campground in Liberal, Kansas. It's OK, but we are down wind from the local feed lot. Having an adult beverage outside of Lucy is not very appealing tonight.

Tomorrow, Lucy takes on the Oklahoma Panhandle.

Great photo's. As for the smell of the feedlot, as they say in ranching country, "that's the smell of money, honey."

You realize that once you get home, unpacked, and have kicked back for a few days you are going to realize that you need to go back on the road again and take a look at another big chunk of the country. You'll be bored to death sitting around the home front now.

When we get home, we're going to give Lucy a good bath and refit her for next big adventure.

Where/when are you planning that? I'll be looking forward to the travelogue on that trip, too.

Day 36 - June 18, 2007

We broke camp in Liberal, Kansas, and headed south into the Oklahoma Panhandle. We stopped in Beaver, Oklahoma, which is the seat of Beaver County. The town mascot is a 12' tall Beaver (see photo). When we first saw him parked on a small trailer between a couple of stores on Main Street, we thought he was about to eat a danish pastry. Upon reading the sign on his trailer, we found that the pastry was in fact a cow manure frisbee. The town's big event is the national championship cow manure tossing contest.

We continued east through the Panhandle and over to Enid, Oklahoma. The drive was quiet, the road was good, and there was very little traffic. We stopped just outside Enid and gave both Lucy and Olivia a good bath.

We arrived at the High Point RV Park at about 3:00 PM. This is a nice campground with five point hook-ups for $20/night. We will be staying in Enid for two or three nights visiting an old friend.

Close guess on the pastry, but the more common term is a "cow pie" and, yes, they do have multiple uses to plains folks.

I believe that they are Purple Martin Houses. Both the clock and the Matin houses are on the lawn of the Beaver County, Oklahoma, Courthouse.

Great trip!!!When you get home, and if so inclined, could you think over the trip and update us all on those things you would have done differently, taken with you, and preped for? So far, other than the tires, it looks great!!!

P.S. None of our Martins showed up this year...and few last year. All our houses are cleaned but empty. Where did the Martins go?

Great idea! Finding the time to do it is the challenge.

We have been keeping notes to do exactly that. After we get home, we will post a trip assessment.

Day 37 - June 19, 2007

We are in Enid, Oklahoma visiting a friend. We spent this afternoon touring the area north of Enid. A band of severe thunderstorms moved into the area early this evening. We returned to our friend's house in Enid. The weather reports were not good. It is storming, and the lightning is everywhere around us. The 10 o'clock news out of OK City is predicting severe thunderstorms and winds up to 70 mph with a second bands of storms coming through North Central Oklahoma after midnight.

We decided that it would be best if we spent the night at Steve's house. We went by Lucy at the campground (3 miles away) and closed everything down and got a few things. We have returned to Steve's house to spend the night. We will report on the outcome tomorrow. Hopefully Lucy will fare OK.
