Day 33 - June 15, 2007

We wnt out this morning and toured Hill City, Custer, Hot Springs, Custer State Park, and Keystone. We even got a shot of Rushmore from way out. This is a really neat area. As usual, we got back to Lucy at dark.

Yes, we have on a former trip. Very impressive. We didn't even go to Rushmore on this trip. The photo in along US 16 about 10 miles out. It was a photo of opportunity near one of the rock tunnels.

Spearfish Canyon, one of our favorite 'mini' drives in the country. Whenever we head west through the area, we sidetrip to the Canyon, up and back, and then on our way. Anyone traveling this area, we recommend that you save time for this drive. ~G

Day 34 - June 16, 2007

We broke camp this morning in Rapid City in a light rain. The rain let up and we hooked-up. We headed east on I-90 across South Dakota. When we got to US 83, we headed south into Nebraska. As we headed south, the terrain became less and less ranch, and more and more farm. US 83 is a good road with almost no traffic. There are hardly any towns along the route. When we came to Stapleton, Nebraska, we decided to drive through and take a little tour. Stapleton is a nice little town that is like going back in time.

We had planned to stop for the night at North Platte, Nebraska. We had made a reservation at Holiday RV Park at Exit 177 on I-80. It's a really nice campground with 5 point (elec/water/sewer/cable/wifi) hook-ups. Lucy made camp and we went next door to Pinky's Dinner next door. It's a really nice 50's diner with great breakfast food anytime. We went by Wal-Mart (1 mile from the campground) for a few things and to partake of the local color.

This campground is great, especially considering the price (under $30 including tax). They have a really nice pool that was custom made in the shape of Nebraska. We were told by the manager that is is the only such pool in the world. I'm going to try to get some pictures of the pool in the morning, and post them to this string.

Here are some pictures of the "Nebraska Shaped Pool" and the campground here in North Platte. Lucy really likes it here and wants to stay for a few days, but I told her we have to move on.

Thumbs up Hall county Park

Moosetags,
East from North Platte on I-80 is Hall county Park at Grand Island. Take the first exit to Grand Island on US 281 going north. The park will be to the right about 6 miles. Nice and relaxing, the park is located next to Stuhr Museum. The Museum is a must stop that displays the historical development of the plains.

Harold Warp's Pioneer Village

Moosetags,

We've REALLY enjoyed your excellent travelogue! It has evoked many memories of places that we've been over the years.

If you have a day, Pioneer Village is worth the side trip. It's located 12 miles south of I-80 exit 279 (NE Hwy 10). The admission is very reasonable - about $10 per person & if you don't see all in one day, the next day's admission was free.

It seems that there is an RV park located nearby, also with reasonable daily rates.

This is probably the largest private collection of Americana in the states & is non-commercial and "authentic." Definitely one of a kind!

Safe journeys!

Carolyn

Unfortunately, we are not traveling along I-80. We are continuing south US 83 through and into the Oklahoma Panhandle.
