We went back up the mountain today on the prowl for Mooses. We were able to see a few before we had to go by the Petersons' campsite to give them a ride into Sheridan to get their truck. We had called Fremont Ford in Sheridan to make sure that they got the new transmission and would have their truck ready before close of business.

Dave Peterson and his oldest daughter, Jessica, piled in Daisy and we headed into Sheridan. When we got to the Ford Dealer, they had just finished with the Petersons' truck. We hung out with them until they were sure that everything was ready to go. While were waiting, we looked at a brand new 2010 Mustang in the showroom. It is really cool.

I was with Dave Peterson when he talked to the service manager regarding what happened to the failed transmission. The service manager told him that apump or cooler line had become clogged and the stress of the climb caused the transmission fluid to boil out the vent tube.

The service manager also told Dave that they recommend installation of a seconday transmission fluid cooler to their customers who tow heavy trailers. Dave commented to me that he intends to do this as soon as he gets back to Wisconsin.

As luck would have it, Fremont Ford is directly across the street from the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Sheridan. We headed across the street to partake of cizilazation (we are really city people) and reprovision Lucy.

Mentioning Wal-Mart reminds me of something that I want to mention. When we were stuck on the mountain in the fog in that dangerous situation, only two other motorists stopped to give us a hand. One was a local rancher who gave us all his road flares to help with warning the oncoming traffic. The other was a man from South Dakota who stopped to help SuEllyn and Karen with warning traffic while I took Dave a couple of miles down the mountain to get a cell phone signal so that he could call for the wrecker. This man told Dave that he travels this stretch of U.S. 14 almost daily and would be glad to bring them any supplies that they may need until their truck was up and going. Dave showed me this man's business card yestreday. He is the regional manager of all of the Wal-Mart Stores in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming.

We then toured around Sheridan for a little while and took a few pictures of some of their interesting vintage commercial buildings. Of particular interest was the J.C. Penney store that still has its sign from the 1930's and the way cool Chevrolet Dealership building.

We then headed back to Ranchester and dropped the supplies off at Lucy. By that time, it was 7:00 PM. Since we still had a couple of hours of daylight, we decided to head back up the mountain in pursuit of the ever elusive Mooses.

We stayed up on the mountain until daylight faded away. We were able to spot an additional 15 Mooses, bring our total spottings for the day to 17. We saw a couple more new Moose Moms with their littl guys. As daylight went away, so did the possibility of decent photos. The sighingts were still of great interes to us.

By the time we got back to Lucy, it was about 10:30 PM. We had another excellent day of Airstreaming.

Kudos to you for stopping to help. You are a true Airstream Ambassador

I also want some moose spotting tips. We have a lot of them around here and for the life of me I have never seen one.

Michelle-

I asked Dave Peterson about the trans temp gauge in his F-250 PSD. He said that his '01 did not come with a factory trans temp gauge, and that he added an aftermarket gauge. He said that his gauge started reading 250+ as he had started up the mountain, and that he had pulled of off into a scenic view area and let it cool down for about 30 minutes. He then restarted up the mountain and that within a couple of miles, it again hit 250. He then started smelling transmission fluid, and the tranny then quit pulling, right on a steep grade with no shoulder and virtually zero visibility in the dense fog. I can not conceive a worse scenerio.

So she did show signs of giving up the ghost before actually dying.
My factory guage is kind of useless. My aftermarket one is not. My temps have been staying 200-210 under heavy load. Without the trailer. The temp is so low it does not register. The bottom of the guage is 180.
Thanks for asking.

We're still here in the Bighorn National Forest in Wyoming seeking out the ever elusive Mooses. It rained off and on all day yesterday, but we still saw thirteen.

SuEllyn hiked about 300 yards out into a field to photograph a young bull at fairly close range. I will admit that it concerned me a bit, but she's a big girl. I did watch very closely with binoculars.

It sure was nice to get back home to Lucy last night. It was down in the 40's all day up on the mountain.

We're still camped in Ranchester, Wyoming.

We were back up on the mountain yesterday is pursuit of our prey. We saw a total of fifteen Mooses. Two of them were most cooperative for a photo session.

There is quite a bit of road construction ongoing in the Forest. We were able to catch a glimpse of a mating pair of giant bulldozers with their newborn. This was a rare sight, indeed.

We stayed up on the mountain until dusk. Then it was back home to Lucy. We will spend one more day in pursuit of Mooses. Tomorrow, we will break camp and head east.

Brian, how do you know you haven't seen the same moose 25 times? So far as I know there are two moose in the whole world—with and without horns. I've seen those same two all over Canada and parts of the US.

The photos of the meadow and Twin Buttes were great—scenes like that are what made me fall in love with the west. And the picture of Hammer Chevy, another Art Deco front. I'm hoping you travel for several more months.

Brian...I enjoyed your narrative regarding the "down" truck...they were fortunate to have your help. A reminder that we should all look for ways to help others.

While I enjoy reading your travel notes...the moose pictures are great. We have Mooses (as you call them ) in Northern MN...but not in the numbers you are seeing. Enough of them (and deer) that we worry while traveling the roads on our motorcylces.

What are you "shooting" your mooses with? What camera and lens? I am a wanabee photographer with little skill...Thanks for your thread...Tom R in Two Harbors, MN

Gene,

Hammer Chevrolet's building in Sheridan is probably one of the best remaining original examples of an art deco auto dealership anywhere in this country. What makes this one extra special is that it is still engaged in its original role as a car dealership. I sure hope that Hammer Chevrolet is not on the GM 'hit list' after 72 years in business.

Here are a couple of more photos that I did not post.

Last Day of Moose Hunting

Today is our last day in the Bighorn national Forest. It rained here off and on most of the day. In spite of the nasty weather, we were able to view seven Mooses in a short day on the mountain. We had a special treat when we spotted a Mother Moose with two little guys. This sighting was close enough to get some good photos.

We returned to Lucy early, and I took Daisy over to Sheridan for a well-deserved bath. After a week on mostly dirt roads in the rain, she was muddy and dirty.

We're starting to pack up Lucy tonight. We will depart in the morning and head east into South Dakota.

Love the moose pictures. Especially the one with the babies.

Any chance we could see a nice picture of Lucy's hitch receiver? We have need of it this week

Teresa,

I am terribly sorry about the pictures. I took them when you first requested them. I really meant to post them, and then forgot. So, here they are.

Tom,

We are shooting our photos with a Nikon D80 Digital SLR with a Nikon DX 18-200mm Zoom Lens with the VR (vibration reduction) feature.

Well, we're on our way home, sort of.

SuEllyn decided two days ago that we coulod make it to Jacksonville in time for Fathers Day. SuEllyn's Dad will be 92 in October, so it would be nice if she were there.

We had a commitment in Sioux falls, South Dakota on Thursday. We spent Wednesday night in Sioux Falls. We departed Sioux Falls around 1:00 PM on Thursday with 1600 miles to go to Jax.

We pulled Lucy until about 11:00 last night and did a little over 500 miles. We have 1046 miles to go. We're planning to get past Nashville tonight, and should make Jax late tomorrow.

500 miles per day is a lot if you do that three days in a row. You will be whupped when you get to Jacksonville on Saturday. Drive safely and take care.

You two are sound a lot like me when I want to be somewhere. Drive then Drive some more. 500 miles a day is not un-common when I travel.

Lucy and Daisy made it back!

We pulled into Jacksonville about dark last night. We are not home yet, but we will stay in Jax for about a week to visit with SuEllyn's Dad, our son, and other family here.

In the last 2 1/2 days, we went from Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Jacksonville, Florida. It was a little over 1600 miles with two quick overnights in Boonville, Missouri, and Manchester, Tennessee. The pace beat us up a bit, but we're feeling really great this morning. Lucy and Daisy are really dirty, but none the worse for wear

Lucy's California Adventure lasted 51 days, covered 19 States, and we did a little over 10,000 miles. Lucy got 4 new tires, all new brakes, and new wheel bearings.
