Lucy's Big Campout
New Lucy has finally hit the road on a really Big Campout. We are planning to be gone until October, and visiting most of the Western States After a number of unavoidable delays, Lucy is finally loose on the open road. We departed Santa Rosa Beach shortly before noon today. At least it was still in the AM.
We made our way up to Montgomery, Alabama, on back roads. At Montgomery, we picked up I-65 and headed north. We went through Birmingham right at 5 o'clock. The rush hour traffic was heavy, but we were able to keep moving. With a stop for fuel in Decatur, we were able to make it to Athens, Alabama, by 7:00 PM. We found a nice campground right by the Interstate. We are overnighting here, just south of the Tennessee state line. We covered about 375 miles today.

I'll be coming along with you (vicariously) if you don't mind. Glad to see Lucy, Ethel & Fred back on the road. I enjoyed your trip last time. Thank you for sharing again!
Looks like our out west adventure will be delayed until next year. DW is still recovering, unable to travel long distance.

Good Evening All,
We actually got an early start this morning. We pulled away from the campground in Athens, Alabama, at 9:30. We continued north through Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and into Missouri. As luck would have it, we made to St. Louis just in time for rush hour. It was a fun ride, pulling Lucy through the heavy traffic and numerous construction zones. We made it through unscathed, and continued on our way north.
We ended up driving nearly 100 miles past St. Louis to Bowling Green, Missouri, which is about half way between Mexico and Louisiana. We found a really nice little campground where Lucy is spending the night. It was around 8 PM when we got here. We covered 500 miles today which is a bunch when towing an Airstream.

Well, you've got fantastic cool weather for Missouri in July. Enjoy your evening up by Bowling Green. You were within a few miles of our home earlier today. Enjoy the trip.. Looking forward to following along.
I hope you are outside enjoying this nice weather. (With a 23FB we tend to sit outside whenever we can.)
Shoot, it's called camping "out" right?

Lucy broke camp this morning in Bowling Green, Missouri, and set out through the Missouri countryside. We drove through Hannibal, Missouri, Mark Twain's home town. We continued through Missouri and eventually into Iowa. We were mostly on the back roads in Iowa. The corn crops seem never-ending. We made it all the way through Iowa and into Minnesota before making camp for the night.
We found a nice campsite at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds in Albert Lea, Minnesota. We were able to set up Lucy just before dark.

Many beautiful county campgrounds in MN.
On your return trip, if you go back thru Iowa, be sure to stop and poke around in Winterset, where Bridges of Madison County was filmed. Beautiful town.
Albert Lea was an ancestor of mine.

Hi Maggie,
I will make a travel note about Winterset. Thanks for tip. Right now, we are making our way up to the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota to do some exploring.
Since you mentioned being a descendent of Albert Lea, I Googled him and was surprised to find that a city in Minnesota was named in honor of a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate Army.

We traveled US 218 through Mount Pleasant, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and on to Floyd where we took US 18 west over to I-35, and then north to Albert Lea. The road was good and the scenery pleasant. It was nice to spend a day away from the interstate.

Yes, pretty wild, isn't it?
Albert Pryor Lea, if I remember correctly. He was a Texas Ranger after the War, too, I believe, and a friend of Sam Houston's.
Lots of beautiful areas in Iowa and Minnesota. If you come back near Washington, Iowa, give a wave to Doug.
Have a great time, and keep posting pics.

And, the Boundary Waters are spectacular.
We really loved the Superior National Forest campgrounds, which are easy to get into.
Heard a pack of wolves howling early one morning there.
They're up there, so mind your little dog, if you have one.
