We decided to stay another day at Regent. We set out this morning from Regent and drove over to Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora, North Dakota. The Park is loaded with free-roaming Buffalo herds. We also saw several groups of wild horses. We spent most of the day in the Park enjoying the sights and wildlife.

We came back to Lucy in Regent, and began getting ready to move on in the morning.

Lucy broke camp this morning in Regent. We were awakened by a low-flying crop duster making his turns over the campground. We headed north from Regent with SuEllyn trying her hand at driving Fred with Lucy in tow. Thing went smoothly, SuEllyn back Lucy into her campsite at the North Park Campground in Dickinson.

After getting Lucy set-up, we took a ride north from Dickinson into the North Dakota Oil Boom area. We stopped at a drilling site north of Deerkill. We got a chance to talk to the site supervisor He told us that the well that they were drilling was going to go 2 miles deep. Then they will turn the shaft to horizontal and drill an additional 2 miles.

We came back to Dickinson, and stopped for fried chicken at one of the local supermarket Tomorrow we plan to do some further exploration of the Oil Boom area.

"Down two miles, then over two miles."
That's hard to imagine.. (For me, anyway)
Ha, maybe they end up pumping it out of Canada.

We were also surprised by the depth of these wells and the massive size of the rigging that drills them. I know that the fracking system that they use to extract the oil is controversial, but at least the oil is coming from North Dakota, and not somewhere in the Middle East.

This part of North Dakota is in the middle of an "oil boom". The highways are loaded with tanker trucks moving product. The shelves at the Wal-Mart in Dickinson are very picked over.

The rig manager we talked to yesterday told us that roughnecks work twelve on, twelve off, fourteen days on, fourteen days off, and are earning $100,000 a year!

Really enjoying following along. Just found this thread today and read it start to finish. We hope to take an extended trip before too long and I am now wanting to do more in the midwest than I was originally thinking about.

Thanks for posting! I love the format, a short writeup and a few pictures.

Lucy is still camped in Dickinson, North Dakota. We toured out today to see what we could of the North Dakota Oil Boom. We drove north to New Town. Along the way we saw more oil drilling rigs and well pumping units than we could count. The number of oil tanker trucks on the highway far outnumbered all other types of traffic. We also saw countless groups of worker housing made up of travel trailers, mobile homes, and prefab housing units.

It was pretty much the same on the road from New Town to Williston. The oil boom is evident throughout this entire area. We stopped at the Wal-Mart in Williston. It was the most crowded Wal-Mart that we had ever been in, and we've been in a whole bunch of
Wal-Marts. All of the 28 check-out were open. The store shelves were very picked over. There was very little fresh meat, very few bags of chips, and the were no televisions left other that the floor models.

US 85 from Williston down to I-94 was also very busy with oil industry traffic and plenty of drilling and pumping rigs. They are in the process of turning US 85 into a four lane divided highway to help handle the oil boom traffic.

We made it back to Lucy a little after dark.

Yep, in and amongst less-than-desirable campgrounds, you have remnants of pioneer banks and other unique-to-the-area sights.

It's all part of the experience.

Have you taken Lucy through Bowman ND, my uncle lives there and just turned 90 . My wife and I are planning a visit in our AS after the Tetons and Yellowstone the end of September into October with stops in Billings (aunt & uncle) and other sights.

I've enjoyed your posts as I was born in Bemidji, have a brother in Duluth and lived briefly as a child in The Fargo area where some relatives still reside. My parents are buried in Casselton ND. Keep us posted and safe travels!

No, we didn't make it as far south as Bowman. Regent was about as far south as we made it.

You are quite correct. Many of the "campgrounds" in western North Dakota are a dirt/mud parking lot with RV hook-ups. It's almost reminiscent of the Dust Bowl hobo camps of the 1930's, as seen in old movies. I guess this situation fills a dire need for worker housing. Th Oil Boom has changed this area.

Currently the highest average rents in the United States are in Williston, North Dakota. They are higher than New York City or San Francisco. Dickinson is #4 following San Jose and San Francisco which are numbers two and three.

Lucy is currently in North Park Campground in Dickinson. It is a very large campground (hundreds of sites) that is mostly long term workers. They have held out a number of campsites for tourists. Lucy has a nice wide back-in that is about 75' deep. This campground is the nicest in the area by far. I has full hook-ups with good wifi. It is $33 a night with GoodSam. It is cash or check only. For $5 you can get a wash permit to wash your RV at your campsite. This is a good deal as we usually spend three times that at a coin car wash bay. Fred, Ethel, and Lucy will all be getting a much needed bath today.

Moosetags, I guess we passed you today. We drove from Jamestown ND. to Medora ND. We are at the Red Trail Campground. Site 8 really has a bad dog smell all around it. Electric quit working, they found a wire burnt inside their box, said my trailer must have caused it. We weren't even using the AC or the micro wave. Plugged into the unoccupied site next to us and everything works fine.

Drove the enchanted highway this afternoon, quite interesting.

Had an incident that happened shortly after we arrived here.
We got all set up and left to see the sights. We hadn't gotten very far when my said she had forgotten her camera. We went back to campground and as we got close I could see water pouring out of the water heater compartment. Oh no I thought a leaking water heater. Got the cover open and saw that the end had blown off of my plastic plug for the heater drain. It is the plug that came with the trailer when it was new.
After water was shut off and hot water had drained from heater I was able to get a screw driver under the broken plug and pry it out. The broken piece was still soft from all the hot water running over it so that made it pliable instead of breaking in to pieces. Got galvanized plug, thread tape and we are back in business. Whew!
If we hadn't came back i'm sure the campground people would have shut the water off and with our electric water heater on it would have probably ruined the heater.
So if you are still using the plastic plug that came with your new Airstream you might want to switch it out before problems arise.
Moosetags love your travel reports and pictures.

Hi Hickory,

Glad that you like the trip thread. Sorry about the water heater issue; glad that you got it resolved.

We are in Dickinson, about 35 miles east of Medora. We enjoyed the Park, but if you have time, take in the Oil Boom. Go east to Belfield on I-94. Then take US 85 north to Williston. Go east on US 2 to Stanley. Then south on ND 8 to New Town. Then go west on ND 1804 to ND 22 through Killdeer and Maning and on the Dickinson. Then you can take I-94 back west to Medora. It's a bit of a long route, but you will get to take in the bulk of the North Dakota Oil Boom.

We are still in Dickinson, North Dakota tonight. We decided to spend another day here so that Lucy, Ethel, and Fred could all get a well deserved and very much needed bath. We bathed the whole crew right at their campsite. It took several hours to complete the job.

This afternoon we went out and got a few provisions for our continuing journey. We also got Fred topped off with diesel fuel.

We made some preparations for pulling out tomorrow. We will be heading west into Montana.
