Great trip thread...
Thanks for sharing your trip details, photos and experiences on the road - I really enjoy taking a little 'armchair' trip with you all after long days at work. I don't have an Airstream yet and am curious to hear what you and your wife think about your 23 FB on a long trip like this one. Safe travels to you.

Thanks for continuing your AirForums' trip threads. They enable those of us who do not go on cross country trips to live vicariously through your descriptions and photos. Your trip notes are especially interesting to us captains of similar size Airstream trailers to see how they perform along the way, and give us incentive to help you troubleshoot if any problems arise. Please continue to document how your new-to-you 23' Flying Cloud is performing and how you and SuEllyn are adjusting to it.
May you have smooth sailing ahead!

Hi, Brian; I thought that you quit traveling for a while. I enjoy reading about your trips, so keep them coming. Why would anyone object? I know that there are many thousands of views on "Bob and Lee's random trip" thread. People seem to like these threads.

I would continue on with this one and all future ones. If the owners of the forum were worried about "bandwidth" (which most people could not explain accurately) they wouldn't have a section called "On the Road". I enjoy reading about other people's trips and seeing their pictures. Post away.

+1. Totally agree. Thanks for posting the pics!
How are the mosquitos? When we did the week long trip with the boy scouts several years ago, we had to be in a tent when it got dark. Too many mosquitos to sit by a campfire. You could hear the roar of their wings in the trees right before dark, and then it was, run for the tents! The temps were fantastic, and the daytime scenery was great. Being able to dip a canteen (with a purification filter built in) into the lake was nice.

Is it true the mosquitoes are big as hummingbirds?

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement on Lucy's trip chronicle.
Lucy broke camp in Ely this morning, and we headed into town to mail some Moose Tags. The Ely Post Office building was built in 1936 during the WPA era, and is pretty much the same almost eighty years later. In the main area, there are hand painted murals that were done by artists hired by the US Government during the Great Depression to give them some work. The ones in the Ely, Minnesota Post Office are in pristine condition. We have included pictures of them. One even has a Moose prominent in the foreground.
We headed out of Ely on Minnesota Highway 1 down to the coast of Lake Superior. It was a scenic and peaceful drive as there was virtually no other traffic on the road. We stopped for lunch at the town of Isabella along Highway 1. There was a really interesting fueling facility there, the likes of which we had never seen before. It is a thousand gallon above-ground tank with a gas pump attached. It looked like it had not been used in many years. The local Moose Ridge Motel consisted of several single-wide mobile homes joined end-to-end which were configured to be a number of individual motel rooms. Like the "gas station", the motel was also defunct.
We continued to the coast where we took Minnesota Highway 61 toward the northeast tip of Minnesota. The was some construction on the highway that afforded us the opportunity to get some good views of Lake Superior. During one of our construction delays, we did some research on the internet and found that Lake Superior is the largest of the great Lakes. We also found, to our surprise, that the Great Lakes contain 54% of the World's fresh water by volume.
We continued along Highway 61 through Grand Marais, and on to Grand Portage. We got Lucy a campsite at a Casino Campground on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation. We got a really nice campsite with a view of Lake Superior. We plan to spend several days here exploring the area.
There is no cell phone service here in Grand Portage and the campground's internet service on and off. Accordingly, we may drop off the grid for a couple of days.
Brian

This morning we toured a little around Grand Portage and drove up to the Canadian Border which is only about 4 miles from here.
We then drove over to Grand Marais and went to the Post Office there with some Moose Tags shipments. From there we headed up the Gunflint Trail (County Road 12) which is designated a scenic byway. It runs about 55 miles north from Grand Marais and dead ends
at Sea Gull Lake. It was a beautiful drive, but the round trip took us all day as we explored many of the side roads and small lakes along the way. We ate lunch out of Ethel in a National Forest Service campground about half way up the road.
By the time we made it back to Lucy, it was after nine o'clock and already dark. We have now settled into Lucy for the night.

As beautiful as I remember.
There's a really good read about the history of the Gunflint Trail, which was a heavy fur trapping/trading area.
We probably got it at the trading post in Grand Marais.....if you are interested, and like to read.

Lucy's Big Campout
We camped at Grand Marais in 2011 on our way home from Churchill, Manitoba. Great town and very convenient to be able to walk into town from the city campground. Try the "World's Best Donuts." They are pretty good. If you head back down the lakeshore to Duluth, be sure to make a stop at Betty's Pies. Best pies anywhere in the country. Parking is a problem there when you're hitched up, we've just stopped on the roadside and Pat made a pie run for us.

Your post has reminded us how fortunate we are to be able to do this kind of exploratory travel. As we sit here in Lucy this morning, overlooking Lake Superior, drinking our coffee, we can't help but be thankful for our lot in life.
