I an really sorry about that. A number of things keep falling through the cracks on this trip. I have your number and will try to call tomorrow.

Lucy broke camp in Roswell this morning and headed west on US 380. We traveled about two hundred miles to Socorro, New Mexico. We got Lucy a nice campsite at the Escondida Lake RV Park. We got Lucy set-up, and headed out to the Very Large Array (VLA). The VLA is the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and consists of twenty-seven dish antennas. The VLA is a 45 mile drive from Socorro, and pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Each one of these antennas is 80 feet in diameter. The mission of the VLA is to map and monitor the Universe with these radio telescopes. This place is a really an impressive sight. We took the walking tour and a bunch of pictures.
We made our way back to Lucy, and have settled in for the night.
Tonight's pictures include:
- US 380 west of Roswell, New Mexico
- Old sod brick homestead along US 380.
- 1850 Torreon in Lincoln, New Mexico, used to fend off indian attacts.
- Old Train Station in Capitan, New Mexico.
- Entering VLA complex.
- SuEllyn captured a tumble weed on the VLA walking tour.
- Dish Antennas at VLA
- Single dish antenna close up.
- Prong horn posed for us on the road out of the VLA.
- Wal-Mart parking lot in Socorro - you just never know what you'll see.

Thanks for the tip on the Goddard Museum in Roswell. We may have missed it otherwise. It is amazing that the Germans were following Goddard's work closely in the 1920's and 30's while our military was busy buying new horses.

Lucy broke camp in Socorro this morning. Before we left town, we stopped at Wal-Mart for supplies. We then continued west on US 60. This route took us by the Very Large Array (VLA) again. We stopped for another short look. We stopped along US 60 and snapped a few more pictures.
We continued west on US 60 through Datil and Pie Town, New Mexico, and into Arizona where we gained another hour as Arizona does not participate in Daylight Savings Time. We made another brief Wal-Mart stop in Slow Low before heading to our campground in Clay Springs, Arizona. We got Lucy a nice pull-through campsite at The Arizona High Country Campground in Clay Springs.
We had dinner in Lucy, and settled in for the night.
Tonight's pictures include:
- Threading the needle through a very narrow highway underpass.
- VLA Antennas from US 60.
- Lucy and Lillian at a rest stop.
- Lucy posing with one of the antennas.
- Old Airstream in a yard in Datil, New Mexico.
- Mother elk and her baby along US 60.
- Pie Town, New Mexico.
- Entering Arizona.
- US 60 in Arizona.
- Lucy and Lillian at their campsite.

And now Roswell is famous for an alien encounter that may or may not have happened while a new generation ignores Goddard's work. Go figure!

People get turned off by the way history is generally taught in school. Going places and seeing where history was made is much more interesting, but the turn-off inhibits that. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, or NASA Center tours bring history to life. Another good reason to travel....

You are most correct about the traveling. We have learned more about this great country than we could have any other way.

Lucy broke camp this morning in Clay Springs, and headed toward Phoenix. We traveled through the Tonto National Forest on Arizona 260. We made our way to Phoenix and were met with heavy traffic. Even though it was not yet rush hour, the traffic was pretty snarled. We made our way to the west side of Phoenix. We had a reservation at the Leaf Verde RV park in Buckeye, Arizona. We got Lucy set-up in a nice campsite. We went out to the grocery store nearby. We came back to Lucy for a nice dinner. We watched a spectacular sunset from Lucy's campsite.
Tonight's pictures include:
- Clay Springs when leaving the campground.
- Arizona 260.
- Roadway along Arizona 260 in the Tonto National Forest.
- Saguaro Cactus appear to be marching up the mountain.
- A single Saguaro Cactus that is at least 100 years old.
- New car display in Tempe, Arizona.
- I-10 traffic in Phoenix. Lucy gets a little nervous in this kind of traffic.
- Lucy settled-in at her campsite.
- Sunset at the campground.
- The sunset became spectacular.

Great photos, what a country!
Can customers actually go up in that CARVANA tower to look at the cars?

Not a clue. It doesn't look like it. I an guessing that they would have to bring it down for a customer.

Sorry about the traffic guys. As the 6th (or close) biggest city we do have bad traffic. We recommend visitors try to cut across the Valley of the Sun from 10:00 to 2:00 and it's iffy at best.
Carvanna is a vehicle vending machine that dispenses the vehicles by auto bot so to speak. Similar to the glass VW towers in Wolfsburg Germany.

We can deal with the traffic. It's just a little daunting pulling Lucy through a big city. We try to avoid big cities when we can. It is not always possible, so we just deal with it.

Lucy is still camped in Buckeye, Arizona, just west of Phoenix. We headed out in Lillian this morning to explore Phoenix. Since it is Saturday, we were able to go all the way to Downtown Phoenix without much traffic. We looked around the central business district. We also went into some of the historic residential areas adjacent to downtown to look at some of the houses there.
On the way back to Lucy, we stopped at Costco. We had planned to have a chocolate frozen yogurt there. We were disappointed to find that they only had an Acai frozen yogurt. What's with that??? We left and went to Sam's where they did have a chocolate frozen yogurt. Costco is now off our list of fine dining establishments.
We continued on to Lucy's campsite for another spectacular sunset. we had a nice dinner in Lucy and have settled in for the night.
Tonight's pictures include:
- Phoenix streetcar heading Downtown.
- Central Avenue heading into Downtown Phoenix.
- 1919 Central Avenue underpass.
- The 1927 Westward Ho Hotel in Downtown Phoenix.
- 1920's apartment court near Downtown Phoenix.
- Palm lined residential street near Downtown Phoenix.
- 1912 residence on two corner lots.
- Another early 20th Century house near Downtown Phoenix.
- The girls facing the sunset at their campsite.
- Another spectacular sunset at the campground.

I sure can Peter. Just tell them that Moosetags sent you. Hopefully they won't switch over to the Acai frozen yogurt as Costco has.

Lucy broke camp in Buckeye, Arizona this morning. We headed west along I-10 as there was no real back road option. We stopped for a few minutes in Quartzsite, Arizona on the way. We continued west on I-10 and crossed into California. We arrived in the Palm Springs area late this afternoon. We got Lucy a nice full hook-up campsite at Catalina RV Park in Desert Hot Springs, California. We got Lucy all settled in, and went out into town for some things at Wal-Mart. We drove around a bit taking in some of the sights.
We went back to Lucy and settled in for the night. We have stopped here in Palm Springs to see some of the mid-century residential architecture that this area is famous for.
Tonight's pictures include:
- I-10 coming into Quartzsite.
- Very large Saguaro in front of a campground in Quartzsite.
- Empty campground in Quartzsite in the off season.
- Entering California.
- A rolling California highway. It was like an amusement park ride.
- There are a lot of windmills outside of Palm Springs.
- Coming into Palm Springs.
- A Palm Springs palm tree lined street.

Today we went toured some of the Palm Springs neighborhoods that were built in the 1950's and feature some of the best mid-century residential architecture in existence. Many of these homes have been meticulously restored to show off their original features. We took pictures of over one hundred of these homes this afternoon. We are posting as many as we can. We really enjoyed our tour and plan to look around further tomorrow.
We concluded a great day with supper at the Club (Sam's Club). We both ate for about $3 each, big spenders that we are. Before leaving, we also got Lillian a tank of Diesel at the best price in town.
We drove back to Lucy and got settled in for the night.
Brian
