Lucy Hits the Road Again

Lucy has finally escaped from Santa Rosa Beach. We headed out mid morning, and traveled west on US 98 over to Pensacola. We continued into Alabama. We stopped for fuel and lunch at Sam's Club in Daphne, Alabama. When we tried to leave, Fred wouldn't start. Drat! We made only 120 miles before a major problem. After several hours, we were finally able to get Fred towed to a local Diesel repair shop. It took 2 wreckers for the job, one to tow Fred and Ethel and the other to tow Lucy. We were able to get Lucy towed to Meaher State Park Campground in Spanish Fort , Alabama. Lucy is now stranded here until Fred is repaired. Not exactly a great start to an epic journey, but we are trying take it in stride.

Today's pictures include:

- Small Blue Angel aircraft decorate the I-10 overpasses at I-110 in Pensacola.
- Entering Alabama along I-10.
- Wreckers to the rescue in Sam's Club Parking lot.
- Lucy settled in at her campsite.

What a start!!! Hopefully it is only a 24 hour delay and you will be on your way promptly.

Looking forward to more additions of Lucy's travelog.

If you'll be at Meaher for a few days, don't miss the chance to head west a couple miles on US90 and visit the Battleship Alabama museum. Also, there are several great seafood restaurants in between Meaher and the battleship, right on US90.

Also in Mobile is GulfQuest, the Gulf Coast Maritime Museum, that just opened in 2015. But don't trust your GPS to give you directions to it. I did, and the GPS mistakenly thought the museum was midway up an on-ramp! It sent me to the left up the ramp instead of right on the surface street to the museum. Then I had to make a big loop around and try again without following the GPS.

Sorry to hear of the problems starting out. Sounds like you're handling the trip's surprises like the seasoned travelers you are and I too am looking forward to your posts. Always a good read. We started our recent long trip in Pensacola, where I grew up. Beautiful area around Spanish Fort but car required unfortunately... Safe and trouble free Travels. Hope this detour is a short one.

Thank you for the tips. We will try to make the best of our unexpected visit to the Mobile area.

It's good to see you back on the Forums, Protagonist.

Following your journeys again. Best of luck with your repairs. You say you are "escaping" Santa Rosa which made me smile as so many choose it as a destination including me! Best of travels.

Moosetags, Sorry to hear about the rough start to your trip. Looking forward to reading about your adventure.

I didn't get to tell you earlier that we had our first moose encounter on our most recent trip. We saw a good sized bull with a nice rack near the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. He was in no hurry, so we got to watch him for a while, along with many others. We were thinking of you while enjoying the encounter. We also had many other rare encounters, such as seeing three black bears on our trip.

Wishing you successful wildlife encounters when your trip gets back on track.

Moosetags....Glad to see you back on the road but hate the trouble news for Fred. After following your previous travels, we were able to do a 3 weeker west this spring. Some snow up north kept us from some areas so we already have our next time list. Safe travels to you both.

Wander out onto the fishing pier late in the afternoon and watch the alligator cruise around.

No, it is Fred. He is a 2011 Silverado Duramax 3500.

Well, Lucy is still camped at Meaher State Park in Spanish Fort, Alabama. So far, the first shop that Fred was taken to had no luck in getting his problem fixed. They spent most of the day yesterday trying to diagnose his issue with no success. Today, Fred was taken to the Chevrolet Dealer in Bay Minette, Alabama. They stated working on him this afternoon. All they know it that is a computer issue that is very difficult to find. Hopefully, tomorrow will bring some success.

Meanwhile, we rented a car yesterday so that we can look around the area. We had dinner last night at a little restaurant in Downtown Daphne that we found on the Diners, Dive-ins, and Dives app. The restaurant is called Manci's and has been there since 1919. Their feature dish is called the Spider Sandwich which is a deep fried soft shell crab on a bun. I had the Spider Sandwich, and it was very good. SuEllyn chickened out and had the shrimp. The Miller Lite was of an excellent vintage. It was an enjoyable evening out.

Today, after visiting Fred at the Chevrolet Dealer in Bay Minette, we drove down to Gulf Shores to see the beach there. It was a pleasant drive and the beach was very nice. On the way back to the campground, we stopped a Popeye's and got some fried chicken. We dined in Lucy and settled in for the night.

Tonight's pictures include:

- Lucy at her Campsite with Mobile Bay in the background.
- Fred getting ready for his ride to Bay Minette.
- Mobile Bay at Fairhope.
- The Beach at Gulf Shores.
- Looking east along the beach.
- Beach Drive in Gulf Shores.

Thanks for the update and lessons in flexibility and adapting to life's changing patterns . . .

Hopefully the fix will be a new circuit board or something fairly simple. Glad the 2017 vintage of Miller Lite was to your liking, along with the crab dish which sounds great.

Spent time in Gulf Shores in the 1960's if you can believe that! Thanks for the reminders of that fine area. Will have to check out the DDD app, as the show always seemed like it would make for a good travlin' companion.

Happy Trails!

Peter

If one is going to be out there on the road, there will at some point be unexpected difficulties with something that put a wrench in immediate plans.

Go with the flow, or stay home, that's what I say...it's all part of the privilege of being able to travel.

Hope repairs can Ben done quickly, and you are on your way soon.

Have a great trip, Brian.

Maggie

Jay, There is no need for any cab nor body components to be removed for head removal. I can send you the service manual pages if you like.

We heard from the Chevrolet Dealer this morning. Fred's main engine control module had gone bad. They found one in nearby Pensacola. Hopefully, Fred will be ready to go this afternoon.
