Close call

My wife was traveling north on I-91 through Massachusetts about 10:45 last night when she almost hit a large bull moose 6 miles south of the Vermont border.
The bright harvest moon was out in full force again last night.

I'm glad to hear that the encounter was close but no contact. We also saw one that same night on Highway 16 at the Maine/New Hampshire line. Fortunately, we were only going about 30 mph. We got a real good look at him in our headlights. He was a mature bull with a giant rack.

We are still in New Hampshire. The last few days have been dreary and rainy. We went over to the Cumberland County Fair in Maine on Sunday. SuEllyn wanted to see the great pumpkin weigh-off. Top pumpkin came in at 887#. We also got to see some show goats and 'oreo' cows.

It's still raining this morning with no end in sight. Since the Moose hunting has been less than great, we have decided to pack up Lucy and head south. We are going to take Lucy home, reprovision her and head to Tampa. Our number three son is deploying with the Army to Afghanistan on 16 Oct. We want to get down there to see him before he leaves.

I don't know whether you've seen any mooses yet, but perhaps you have forgotten what they look like what with tire problems and such.

To help, here are two pictures. The first photo is not a moose, but in Northern Exposure Marty the Moose would walk by. The animal depicted below "Roslyn Cafe" is a camel. This memory may have confused you. I know how as I age, memories get confused and I get things mixed up. Just ask my wife. If you are looking for camels in Maine, you will probably not find any.

The second photo is of a moose. The Moose Jaw area grows them large. Eating all that prairie grass has led to a subspecies called the Prairie Elephant Moose. Don't expect to see ones this big in Maine.

I hope your tires are holding up.
