Sorry I missed your post. Our Internet availability is on and off. We are still up at Shin Pond this evening. We have been into the north end for the last two days and have seen nothing.

We are planning to head to the south end of the Park tomorrow. We are going to move Lucy's camp to Katahdin Shadows in Medway tomorrow morning.

Thank you very much for the Moose info. We will try to get to Sandy Stream Pond tomorrow afternoon.

Are y'all still in i the area?

Brian

We have been enjoying the hiking so much in this MAGNIFICENT park that we will be staying in Katahdin Shadows until Wednesday: it's quiet after the "adult weekend". We passed Lucy at Shin Pond, but we picked a mooseless pond that day. I was, however, having a bit a lunch with Julia Childs near Katahdin stream falls when she trilled, "Oh my, look there a Moouse!" Thinking I had discovered a new sub alpine Moose, I quickly scanned the horizon in both directions. Looking back, I found her scattering crumbs (smokehouse cheddar, I believe) near an opening in the rock we were sitting on..... very disappointing...

see you tomorrow; we're in site 62.

Lucy was camped at Shin Pond for a couple of days while we explored the north end of Maine's Baxter State Park. The hiking was great, but there were no Mooses to be found.

Today, we moved down to Medway and made camp here to explore the south end of Baxter and the Golden Road. We were able to set Lucy up early enough to get in a short hike in the Park before dark. Again, no Mooses, but tomorrow is another day.

Brian, it seems that you have unusually more tire problems every time you take a road trip with Lucy than anyone else on the forum. Just wondering if it is an issue related specifically to the early front bedroom models or is there an issue specifically with Lucy that causes so many tire problems? Hope this is the last for this trip and enjoying the trip so far. Looking forward to more pictures along the way. Good luck in finding mooses.

'Mate may be on to something Brian, now that I think about it. The fact that you document every trip—and there's a lot of miles there—may make it seem that way though. Do you drive 95 mph? Keep 20 psi in the tires for a "soft" ride? Sounds like you are ready for LT tires. We are really pleased with them.

Even though you haven't tagged any mooses, seems like you are having a good trip and seeing some special places.

I don't know the answer to why Lucy seems to have an inordinate amount of tire problems over her entire lifespan. I don't see where it can be an issue with Lucy herself. The tire problems have been different. We had blowouts with the Marathon D's. The problems with the Maxxis E's have been with tread separation.

Gene,

I generally only post a thread on Lucy's big adventures. There are many other shorter trips to less glamorous places. Lucy is doing about 20,000 miles a year. We do drive a little on the fast side, 65 to 70 mph. I run the Maxxis E's at 72 psi and check the pressure often.

I'm ready for something different. ST tires generally seem to be junk. In another thread, someone posted some information that the expected like span of an ST tire was 5 to 10 thousand miles. I guess the manufacturers figure that ST tires will age out before they wear out. At the rate Lucy travels, I don't want to be changing out her tires 2 to 4 times a year.

Brian, we run the Michelin LTX tires at 68 psi and generally travel no more than 65. Forum posters say a lot of people with RV's don't travel anywhere close to the miles you do or we do, for that matter, travel in a year. It seems a lot also drive pretty slowly, sometimes because they can't go any faster. So, those people might be able to do ok with junk tires and only have to replace them every 3 or 4 or more years.

Our Michelin's had 73,000+ miles on them before we replaced them earlier this year. We had had them rotated regularly and experienced no problems with them.

Close call

My wife was traveling north on I-91 through Massachusetts about 10:45 last night when she almost hit a large bull moose 6 miles south of the Vermont border.
The bright harvest moon was out in full force again last night.

I'm glad to hear that the encounter was close but no contact. We also saw one that same night on Highway 16 at the Maine/New Hampshire line. Fortunately, we were only going about 30 mph. We got a real good look at him in our headlights. He was a mature bull with a giant rack.
