Friday was another dark and dreary day in northern Maine. We decided to stay on the paved roads today since it was still raining steadily. We ventured up US 1 through Caribou and on up to Van Buren. US 1 turns at this point and follows the St. John River which is the boundary between Maine and New Brunswick. We continued through several little town on to Fort Kent. Fort Kent is the northern terminus of US 1.

We returned to Presque Isle via a different route through St. Agatha and New Sweden. We were amazed at the number of very large churches along this route. Virtually every little town has a humongous church befitting the downtown area of a big city.

The day was not a total loss. SuEllyn was able to get a lobster roll for lunch at the Tastee Freeze Madawaska.

There is sunshine in northern Maine! It finally cleared on Saturday and we headed out into the North Maine Woods. The North Maine Woods is a block of land in northern Maine encompassing 3.5 million acres that is ownd by a consortium of lumber interests. It is maintained primarily for lumber production, but personal recreational use is permitted.

We spent the whole day, Saturday, searching the back road area of this vast wooded area looking for Mooses. We did not see a single Moose. We saw only one dear, and we covered 57 miles in the woods. The area seemed almost devoid of all wildlife. We stayed out in the woods until it started to get dark. It just wasn't our day.

On Sunday, we headed south down toward Baxter State Park. Still no Mooses, but we haven't given up. It's now Monday morning, and we're not sure which way we are going to head today. Lucy remains camped at Presque Isle.

When you are running through CT again send me a note. I'd love to treat you to some pizza in New Haven. Good luck spotting some Moose.

If it's polypropelene , epoxies and fibre resins won't work . Plastic welding is the best . Eternabond claims it will patch a hole in a water or waste tank but I have not tried it. A screw or bolt with rubber washers might work if you can get to it.

If it's ABS the glue and a patch should work.

If it's fiberglass then a patch kit should work

Good luck and happy moose hunting.
Do they recommend something other than the roof repair kit? This intrigues me for a leak I have in one of my black tanks. Thanks

Hi Brian, did you head over to Daicey and Kidney ponds at Baxter?

I have seen moose every time I went to those areas...and black bear at Katahdin Stream camp ground area...

Keep your chin up...you are well into moose country...it's only a matter of time!

Safe travels,
Bill

Brian,

I hope you've seen some wildlife by now. I've never been that far north in Maine, though I've been thinking about it since I was a little kid. That dome on the old bank building is strange. I wonder what the building is like on the inside and if you can see the dome from the first floor.

Sorry to hear about more tire problems and the leaking water tank. Since your trailer is only 5 years old, a hole in the tank seems to indicate some sort of design problem and makes me nervous about our trailer tanks. How did you discover the hole?—every time I look under the trailer, those big boxes around the tanks look intimidating. Looks like you have to drill out the rivets to see anything, not something enjoyable, especially on the road.

I can understand the interest in 16" wheels and LT tires—that $250/wheel deal at JC may be for Goodyear Wranglers. Although a very popular tire, I prefer Michelins.

Thanx for the pizza invite. I'll let you know if we are heading back that way.

I am going to try JB Weld to repair the tank.

Thanx for the tip, we are planning to head back toward Baxter tomorrow. The clouds are back. It's another gloomy day in northern Maine.

No need to worry about your tank, Gene. I know how mine was damaged. About four weeks ago, when were were heading south on I-95 from South Carolina to Jacksonville, we hit a rather large gator (piece of tire tread from a semi) in the road. It was unfortunately unavoidable. The gator went under Daisy, and she threw it back under Lucy. It apparently hit Lucy's fresh water tank, and took a little chunk out of it. It continued back and mangled the landing foot on Lucy's right rear stabilizer. I was able to remove the foot and somewhat straighten it out with a combination of vises and hammers.

I have not yet had an opportunity to try my JB Weld repair on the tank yet.

Brian, Eternabond tape is pretty amazing stuff; I keep some in the AS and TC....cause you never know?
Some Wally worlds carry it...don't think your near any of those right now.
Might call these Guys they service RV's;
Caribou Ford Mercury

(207) 496-3111
16 Access Highway
Caribou, Maine 04736
Map it!

And these Guys...both are close by;
McCluskey's RV Center
Houlton Road, P.O. Box 1616
Presque Isle, Maine 04769
Phone: (207) 762-1721

Don't know if you'll get up that far...but check out the Golden Road...goes all the way to Canadia!
Plenty o' mooseseses for sure!

Has this trip helped firm up your mind about the TC?
Northern Maine is the kind of place one of those comes in handy!

Good luck-have fun!

Bill

Sorry to hear about your tank, etc., issues, and hope you are able to get them repaired soon. Also hoping you find the elusive moose.

Rainy and overcast in Maine is the norm, ya' know, in our experience. Sunny and bright is to be embraced and cherished, as it is soon gone. That said, it is a beautiful state and shoreline and enjoyable in spite of the weather.

Hope you're getting some fresh lobster partaken of while there.

Travel safe,

Maggie

We have seen quite a few truck camping opportunities since we have been up here.

Still no Mooses to be found. It rained again all day today, so we just messed around Presque Isle. If we get Lucy's tire in tomorrow we plan to head down to make camp at Medway, Maine. From there we will do Baxter State Park and the Golden Road.

SuEllyn looks well prepared with her bug spray and magic staff. Can't the magic staff conjure up mooses?

SuEllyn's bug spray is wasp/hornet spay. She uses it to repel lions and tigers and bears. If that doesn't work, she uses her magic staff to shoo them away. The magic staff has not done very well at conjuring up any mooses.
