Beautiful pictures of a beautiful land. The overcast really brings out the color of the rocks. Wish we could get a bit of that rain in south Texas.

Brian, that guy was putting off road tires on his Airstream? Maybe he was going to go through deep sand, though pulling 2 trailers through sand is not my idea of fun. Or, did he come through that big light blotch in the sky, an apparent rift in the space/time continuum?

Gene,

It looked like he putting the off road knobby tires on the truck. I don't know if he was planning pulling the Airstream on the little trailer through the dunes.

Moab to Escalante

BODY,.aolmailheader {font-size:10pt; color:black; font-family:Arial;} a.aolmailheader:link {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:visited {color:magenta; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:active {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:hover {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} Lucy broke camp in Moab this morning in the pouring rain, and headed south toward Escalante, Utah. Along the route which includes Utah Highway 24 and Utah Highway 12 is some really spectacular landscape including driving through a portion of Capitol Reef National Park and the Dixie national Forest.

The 220 mile drive took the entire day. Between the rain, snow and winding mountain two lane roads, it was slow going with Lucy in tow. We also stopped fairly often for photo ops and snacks.

We arrived in Escalante a little after 5:00 PM and made camp at the Shooting Star Drive-in Movie and RV Park. As we write this tonight, the outside temperature is 34 degrees. We are snuggled in Lucy with the gas Furnace on.

Brian, you can drive along the trail Mormons broke in the 19th century on their way to settle Bluff. It's about a 100 mile drive before you get to Hole in the Rock or Hole in the Wall (memory issues again). 20 years ago we needed a 4wd in a few places. At the Hole they had to build a "road" down to the Colorado River and until you see it you won't understand how hard it was.

The drive to Escalante is wonderful and thanks for showing it to us again. We had snow here yesterday—almost an inch, melted fast.

We did Utah 12 from Utah 24 all the way into Escalante. The scenery was spectacular.

We went down the Hole in the Rock Road as far as The Devil's Garden ( 13 miles). The road is nice and wide but in terrible shape (super washboard). We couldn't bare to do the additional 45 miles to Hole in the Rock. Olivia would have gone on strike if she had to do 110 miles of that road. I think that the road is suffering from the recent rains. Hopefully they will scrape it soon.

Devil's Garden, Utah

Lucy is still camped in Escalante, Utah. We looked around the Drive-in Movie Campground where we are camped. They have furnished and equipped Airstream Trailers available to rent as hotel rooms. They also have a drive-in theater on the grounds. They have vintage cars for you to sit in while watching the outdoor movie.

We then headed into the back country to see the highly recommended Devil's Garden. This is an area of wind carved rock formations that are a must see in this area.

Devil's garden is about a 20 mile drive out a dirt road that is pretty rough and requires 4 wheel drive in some spots. This road is through open range (livestock grazing, but no fences) which demands full driving attention. Large cows or horses are likely to be in the roadway. We ran across one such large bovine specimen along this road. SuEllyn decided to try out her trusted moose call horn out on her. She was extremely interested and responded to SuEllyn's moose call. This is quite amazing because mooses do don't respond to it at all. Maybe the package was miss-marked as a moose call when actually it is a cow call.

When we arrived at Devil's Garden, we were quite impressed with the rock formations. We both decided that these are the most amazing natural formations that we have ever seen. What makes it even more special is that you can get up close and personal with all of them We took a lot of pictures, and stayed until darkness started to close in on us.

Brian, seeing your pictures reminds me of our trip through there just a couple weeks ago. I see you are encountering a wide variation of weather conditions like we did. We drove past the drive in Airstream park in Escalante on our way from Bryce Canyon to Torrey on April 29th. They were not open yet but looked close. I will guess that you are headed to Bryce Canyon City from Escalante? We did stay at Monument Valley at Gouldings. Nice campground but I would imagine the wind would make a real mess with all the red sand blowing around. We had some very cold nights on our trip....21 in Bryce Canyon, 24 in Torrey and 27 in Tusayan. Our furnace really got a workout. Stay warm and hopefully the weather will be more seasonal.

We are planning to head out tomorrow west on Utah 12 over through Bryce Canyon. We are planning to end up over at Saint George tomorrow night unless something strikes our fancy along the way.

Lucy is still camped in the Shooting Star Airstream Park and Drive-In Theater in Escalante, Utah. This morning we did some maintenance and repair items on Lucy. She got a new clearance light in stalled to replace a malfunctioning one. We had gotten the part at the Airstream Dealer in Denver, but had not installed it until today. We also pulled and cleaned the filters in the air conditioner/heat pump. They had gotten really dirty with the dusty areas that we have been in. By the time we were through with these minor items, half the day was gone.

We headed out in Olivia for Calf Creek. We checked out the campground and several of the hiking trails. The scenery was just beautiful. At one of the state parks, we ran across a Casita rally. Those little guys are really cute. We broke off the touring a little early as the drive-in theater at the Airstream Park was showing a movie tonight.

On the way back to Lucy, we took one of the back streets in Escalante. In a fence in back yard was a small buffalo and some type of cow that we have never seen before. It looks like a cow with the face of a dog. Does anyone what kind of cow this is?

When we got back to Lucy, we walked over to the drive-in theater when we sat in a 1965 Ford convertible with the top down and watched an old Lone Ranger Movie, and dined on pizza from the concession stand which is in a converted vintage Airstream.

When we got back to Lucy, we started packing up a few things in preparation for departure tomorrow.

Brian, looks like a bull, not a cow. Just one of several varieties of cows and bulls out west. When you see cattle on the road just slow down and they almost always move out of the way, usually in their own time. Wait 'til you come across a cattle drive—just drive slowly through it watching the young ones carefully because they are the most unpredictable.

Lucy broke camp at the Shooting Star this morning and we headed west along Utah 12. Our plan was to drive on down to St. George, Utah, which is near Zion National Park. Well, it didn't happen that way. We got about 40 miles west of Escalante and came across Bryce Canyon National Park. We decided to go into the visitor center and take a look. The next thing we knew, Lucy was making camp on one of the campsites in the North Campground in the Park. It was early in the day, so we got a really nice site and settled in.

It was early enough to take one of the hikes in the Park. We took the hike from Sunrise Point down to Queens Garden. The hike was 1.8 miles in and 28.6 miles out, or at least it felt that way as the return hike was like climbing stairs for 1.8 miles. The scenery was breathtaking, though. The trip was definitely worth the effort.

We got back to Lucy in Time to run the generator for awhile and charge her batteries for the night. There are no hook ups in the campground.

We are going to take a walk around the campground and see if there are any other Airstreams here.

Brian and Sue,
Last summer we stayed at Snow Canyon State Park outside of St. George as we were going to and coming home from Yellowstone. We chose Snow Canyon on a whim because it was a convenient stopping place for us. What a great decision! It is a very beautiful spot... with some sites with electrical and water hookups. Check it out if you have the opportunity... you won't be disappointed.
