If Lucy happens to be "in the neighborhood" the weekend of May 12-15 (TH-F-S-S) she might be heading for the Fort Collins Lakeside KOA! Rumor has it there's a big DenCO Unit Maintenance Rally going on which somebody (uh, me!) is hosting and somebody else (Aerowood + 43 others, many of which you will recognize from AirForums) are gathering.

Maybe Lucy would like to meet Birdy, et al...

We camped in the Bighorns last summer and had a wonderful time. It was our first trip to that part of the world and we loved it! We did our best to find some moose, but no luck. The locals said that for some reason moose spotting was a bit slow that summer. But we plan to get back there again soon. Maybe we'll have better luck. But even without the moose the Bighorns were spectacular. I'm looking forward to following Lucy's latest adventure!

Brian,

Looks like you'll be either north or west of here or I'd suggest you stop by. No mooses here, but if you put several mule deers together (we have lots of mule deers) you get a moose. Sometimes elks come by—2 elks = 1 moose; 4 mule deers = 1 moose.

I hope you find the truck camper that works for you. Back in the late '90's I had a client who bought another Denver area brand and we had to fight to get things fixed properly—some was, some wasn't. I'd hate to see you buy something from a company that's is so far from home and have warranty issues. I'd compare closely with nationally known brands. Once you get a camper, what are you going to do with the cap?

A horny truck camper . . .

Hi Brian:

You may have already considered Alaskan Campers, "it raises - it lowers", for your new truck. An Alaskan Camper would wonderfully compliment Lucy because, as shown below, its name plate features the large horns from your favorite wild animal.

Some Alaskan Camper history with pictures can be read here: Slide-in Camper, Alaskan Campers. Inc. - Alaskan Pickup Truck Camper RV a slide-in pop-up camper for those who camp.

And most fitting trip wise, there is an Alaskan Camper dealer in Fort Collins, CO, very convenient to the Denver Unit Maintenance Rally mentioned by Shari:

ED CARROLL MOTOR COMPANY
3001 South College Ave.
FORT COLLINS, CO 80625
970- 226-3000
Ed Carroll Motor Company

Hope you can drop by our Maintenance Rally. Fair winds!

We were at the Alaskan dealer in Fort Collins last summer shopping the Alaskan. We really liked it, but the east/west sleeping arrangement and the lack of an inside shower were deal breakers. We really liked the campers though. They are way cool.

Lucy had a long day

We were up early this morning. The generator made it through the night without having to be gassed-up. We ran into Wal-Mart for a few things which was easy as Lucy woke up in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

We got Lucy packed-up and got her on the road by 8:30. We didn't get very far before we found that I-40 was closed because a section of the roadway was under water. We were put on a detour route that put us about 40 miles out of our way. That wasn't a big deal except covering that 40 miles took just under 5 hours. the traffic was extremely heavy and consisted mostly of trucks. During this slow moving traffic we saw quite a few homes and other buildings under water near the highway.

We continued on to Enid, Oklahoma. Because of the long delay, we didn't arrive at the campground until 9:30. By the time we made camp, it was after 10.

We have stopped here in Enid to visit an old friend.

Hi from Ga. . .enjoying your travels already Brian, thanks for the posts. Where was that detour, in OK or ARK ? We've been across I-40 several times, I think we stopped in that rest/picnic area with the teepee deals too. We'll hit the road on May 29 and head for the Badlands of SD and Yellowstone etc. We're going to cross the Big Muddy near St Louis, if we can. We still gotta try that 4CU/East get together one these days ! Are you going to get to see the 4CU folks this trip ? OK<OK enough questions , sorry. Be careful out there and regards, Craig

The I-40 detour started just west of Forrest City, Arkansas. It took us up to US 64 as US 70 is also closed. It took us west to US 167, and then back down to I-40 near Little Rock. We continued on US 64 to Conway as we were west bound to Oklahoma and avoided the dip down into Little Rock. This detour added five hours to our trip. We got into Enid at 9:30 PM. We had to do our all to usual making camp in the dark.

We're not specifically planning any 4CU encounters, but you never tell.

We're not sure of our schedule yet, but in case that will work for us, are there any sites available at the KOA?

Last spring we camped in Buffalo, Wyoming, and went into the south end of the Bighorn National Forest (for some reason the Bighorn National Forest one word and the Big Horn Mountains is two; go figure). We had over 100 Moose sighting in ten days. This was before the hot summer set in. When we went Moosing in Maine late last summer, there was few Mooses to be found as the hot dry summer kept them in the high country.

The Bighorn National Forest is where we are headed after Denver.

I'm not sure...I know our reservation was made months ago and we are up to 45 trailers. I think that was the most they could give us as a group - but the campground is quite large - you'd have to call them to check their availability once your plans are known...it's a pretty popular spot on a weekend though, so you will most likely need a reservation to stay.

Stop by even if you can't stay for the night. I know as rally host, I will be parked next to the pavillion....you can't miss us!

Where do you place your generator when over nighting at Wal-Mart? Also, when traveling do you place the generator in the Suburban or in the Airstream?

Have a wonderful trip!

When we overnight at Wal-Mart or at a truck stop, we put the generator(s) on the ground between Lucy and her tow vehicle. I usually stick the control panel side of the generator slightly under the bumper of the tow vehicle to keep direct rain off of the controls and outlets. I lock them to Lucy with a cable lock.

While we are underway, Amos and Leon (the generators) ride inside the Suburban right by the back gate. This allows me to move them in and out pretty easily.

Lucy is camped in Enid, Oklahoma. We took it easy this morning after our long ordeal of yesterday. Lucy is going to lay in here for a couple of days while we visit our an old friend.

We toured around the area with our friend today. We visited the McCully sod house near Cleo, Oklahoma. It is the only remaining sod house intact on its original site in the United States. It was built in 1893 and lived in by its builder, Marshal McCully, until 1909, when he built a wooden house nearby. He continued to use the sod house as an out building. McCully had claimed this land in the Cherokee Strip Land Run in September, 1893. He descendents still own and farm this tract of land today.

We also visited a number of the small towns in the area. We didn't get back to Lucy until after dark.

Tomorrow we are headed to the Rattlesnake Roundup in Okeene, Oklahoma. This promises to be quite an event. We will report tomorrow.

Brian

Oops, forgot the pictures.

Note that the State of Oklahoma built a building around the sod house to preserve it.
