FYI (don’t want you to get flamed over on the TC forum!) that is not really a “Truck Camper”…rather referred to as an Expo or Overland vehicle…
Typically, Unimogs/Mans/Fuso/etc are hard mounted to the chassis and not (readily) removable.
Truck campers must be removable to be classified as such.

You must be psyched to have finally made a decision.
Remember…I warned you!

Hey Bill.

Thanx for the info on the nomenclature. I may not mention it over there on the TC forums as it is not as easy to post pictures there.

We are all exited about the TC thing. We see a lot of side trip opportunities as we travel.

Do you guys have Monument Valley on your list? You are kind of in range (of course, a Virginian will say that everything is in range out there). If you can swing it, go to Goblin Valley, tour the Horseshoe Canyon unit (if you can do the 600' climb out) and then head south to Monument Valley. If you have not done it, do it. Go to Gouldings Trading Post and try to leave with your wallet.

If you have been there, in the words of Emily Letella - "Never mind".

If any sort of wind is up, don't bother with Monument Valley. The fetches for wind are long. We had easy conditions headed from Navajo Bridge to Tuba City a year ago. Winds were really wailing by the time we got to Kayenta -- so strong that the southern half of the sky at Moab was brown. Consider Monument Valley if it's anything less than that. US-163 from Kayenta to Mexican Hat is scenic enough. But it takes quite a detour into a pay area of the reservation to get the full Hollywood Thelma & Louise scenery. Worth it if you have time.

FWIW -- Bluff was the artist escape destination of 10 years ago and it has drawn too much attention to remain that. Fair campground choices worth researching as I saw it driving through ... headed to Moab of course.

Lucy is still camped in Moab, Utah. Today we visited Arches National Park which is not far out of Moab. The rock formations and various famous arches are really cool. The sights were breathtaking. The size and scale of these rock formations are amazing. We took lots of pictures, and stayed in the park until dusk.

On the way back to Lucy, we stopped at the City Market in Moab and got a really nice baked cod supper from their deli. Then is was back to Lucy for nice supper as a full moon appeared over the snow capped mountains in the distance.

Here are a few photos of the day in Arches NP.

Hi, Brian. I see that you moved that piece of dead tree that has been there for hundreds of years. Watch out for the park rangers. Also did you hike to the Delicate Arch? We did, but the path got quite narrow at the top and the wind was blowing really hard, so I wasn't feeling to good about being up that high. I don't like heights. My wife is the dare devil or mountain goat. [no fear of heights like me]

No, we didn't hike up to delicate Arch. It was getting really late in the day, so we let the telephoto lens do the hike for us.

Dead Horse Point

Today we got a late start because Olivia had to go to the Chevrolet Dealer here in Moab for a repair to the electronics of her 4 wheel drive system. While she was there she got her front differential serviced and her oil changed. Moab Chevrolet did really well with Olivia. She was out in two hours.

On our way out of town we saw a very unusual Airstream rig at a roadside rest area. the owner was in the process changing street tires to off roads. I never realized that an Airstream would pull another trailer.

Even though it was raining, we headed out to Dead Horse Point State Park to see the famous hairpin turn in the Colorado River. Sights in the park are quite impressive, especially Dead horse Point itself.

We got back to Lucy a little before dark, and started breaking camp as we plan to head out tomorrow morning and go down to Escalante, Utah, and see the Grand Staircase National Monument.

Brian

Thanks

Beautiful pictures of a beautiful land. The overcast really brings out the color of the rocks. Wish we could get a bit of that rain in south Texas.

Brian, that guy was putting off road tires on his Airstream? Maybe he was going to go through deep sand, though pulling 2 trailers through sand is not my idea of fun. Or, did he come through that big light blotch in the sky, an apparent rift in the space/time continuum?

Gene,

It looked like he putting the off road knobby tires on the truck. I don't know if he was planning pulling the Airstream on the little trailer through the dunes.

Moab to Escalante

BODY,.aolmailheader {font-size:10pt; color:black; font-family:Arial;} a.aolmailheader:link {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:visited {color:magenta; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:active {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:hover {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} Lucy broke camp in Moab this morning in the pouring rain, and headed south toward Escalante, Utah. Along the route which includes Utah Highway 24 and Utah Highway 12 is some really spectacular landscape including driving through a portion of Capitol Reef National Park and the Dixie national Forest.

The 220 mile drive took the entire day. Between the rain, snow and winding mountain two lane roads, it was slow going with Lucy in tow. We also stopped fairly often for photo ops and snacks.

We arrived in Escalante a little after 5:00 PM and made camp at the Shooting Star Drive-in Movie and RV Park. As we write this tonight, the outside temperature is 34 degrees. We are snuggled in Lucy with the gas Furnace on.

Brian
