Glad to see you are on the road again. The great smokies are on our list, someday I hope. I think they represent some of the most beautiful country in the USA.

We stopped into Haydocy Airstream in Columbus, OH today to return an accessory and buy some more. Salesman Bruce Miller said they have two (2) FC 25 twins coming in July -- one pre-sold and one not. Someone, please buy the available one so I am not tempted. Not sure if they are front or rear bedroom but from what I have read there are pluses and minuses for both.

BTW, Brian, I just reeived a Sewer Solution and am looking forward to testing it out. Correct that -- no one looks forward to handling sewerage so lets say I am looking forward to not getting my hands dirty.

Lucy rested at the campground today while we headed out and toured the area. We started out by heading over to Chuckey, Tennessee, where we visited the Post Office as we had several orders of Moose Tags to get out. We looked around Chuckey. There wasn't a whole lot to see, but the surrounding countryside was beautiful.

We then made our way on back roads over to the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park. The Park includes the site of the cabin where the famous outdoorsman, US Congressman, an Alamo Defender was born in 1786. There is a reproduction of the Crockett Family's timber cabin on the approximate original site along the Notichucky River. When Davy Crockett was born, this area was considered to be part of North Carolina. It became part of Tennessee when Tennessee was admitted to the Union in 1796.

The Park has a very nice RV campground, and there was an antique tractor show while we were there today. We had a very nice visit.

From there we headed over to Greeneville, Tennessee. Greeneville is the seat of Greene County. It is the only Greeneville in the United States spelled this way as it was named in honor the Revolutionary War Hero, Nathaniel Greene. Greeneville was the Capital of the short-lived State of Franklin before Tennessee was admitted to the Union under that name.

Greenville, Tennessee is also the hometown of the 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson. President Johnson lived here both before and after the War Between the States. We toured Greeneville for a couple of hours. There are many historic and architecturally-significant buildings in Greenville. We took lots of pictures.

After a quick Wal-Mart stop, we made our way back to Lucy. We made it back well before dark, and got settled in for the night.

I just had to list this picture separately. It was taken of one of the historic commercial buildings on Main Street in Downtown Greeneville, Tennessee.

If you will look carefully, the faded sign at the top of the building identifies the former occupant of this building as the Doughty-Stevens Company. The company identified themselves as furniture dealers and undertakers. A rather strange, and somewhat amusing, combination.

We love finding these bizarre business combinations. Two years ago in a small town in rural Maine we came across a business that was a wrecker service and wedding chapel.

Thanks for the photos. I just love those small towns. Greenville looks very appealing. Exploring is a major part of the Airstream travel adventures. You never know what you might discover. Furniture and Funeral Parlor, or old tractor show, or other historic old theaters (which looks like more fun than Netflix).

The story about the State of Franklin is very interesting. That is one of those moments in history which I never learned in school.

I am very much enjoying your posts, Brian and am looking forward to more.

Actually Brian, after the civil war undertaking as a business was in its infancy & the men who made the caskets or coffins as they were then called were the furniture makers. So, many furniture makers evolved into the undertaking business. At the time no licensing was required so furniture makers would just hang a shingle on the furniture store advertising themselves as Undertakers. As years passed it became a very lucrative business combination and continued on well into the 20th century until state laws required licensing of undertakers & embalmers. BTW, during the civil war any soldiers that were embalmed for transport home were embalmed by Physicians, who became known as Embalming Physicians & Dr Thomas Holmes became known as the father of modern day embalming. Just thought you might like to know....Joe

Thank you for this information, Joe. I never realized any of that. I had never seen a sign with this combination before, and I am always looking for old faded signage on building walls. I guess that would mean that this sign quite old.

I spent 41 years in the death care industry, graduating from mortuary school in Syracuse, NY in 1965, so that is a topic I know much about.

If you have time go look at the "Cannonball Church" in Greeneville TN, you can go and see a civil war cannon ball still embedded in the wall of the church.
We took some pictures of it when we were there but can not find them to post.
Here's the address of the church "201 N Main St, Greeneville, TN" or you can do a search for cannonball church and see it.

We plan to do some more touring tomorrow. If we get back over toward Greeneville, we'll go see the church. Thanks for the tip.

We spent most of the morning on housekeeping chores in Lucy. We set out about noon to do some more exploring of the area.

First we headed over to Erwin, a small town about 20 miles east of Chuckey. Erwin's claim to fame is that an elephant was once hanged to death there for killing its handler. This story began on September 12, 1916, in Kingsport, Tennessee, when a Sparks Shows Circus Elephant named Mary became annoyed and killed her handler. At the Circus's next stop in Erwin, Tennessee, it was decided that Mary needed to be put down. When the circus arrived in Erwin on September 13, 1916, they used a railroad crane car to hang poor Mary.

Its checkered past not with standing, Erwin is a very nice little town. It's old railroad terminal is a spectacular example of an early 20th Century railroad station.

We then headed up to Roan Mountain. We visited the State Park there. It was a beautiful drive up the mountain to an elevation of over 6,000 feet. We came back down on the North Carolina side of the mountain.

We made it back to Lucy shortly before dark. We had some supper and settled in for the night.

Brian

This post was supposed to go out last night, but the campground lost it Internet, so here it is now.

Lucy spent another day relaxing around the campground while we did some more exploring. We headed over to Hot Springs, but stopped on the way in Greeneville to see the Civil War cannonball that has remained embedded in the front wall of the Greeneville Presbyterian Church. The church was hit by this cannonball during a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces on September 4th, 1864. The Confederate forces were under the command of General John Hunt Morgan who was killed in the battle.

We continued on to Hot Springs, North Carolina. Hot Springs is a little tourist town on the French Broad River. Hot Springs was the site of a German POW Camp during the First World War (1917-1918).

From there we drove over to Newport, Tennessee, another one of the small mountain towns.

We headed back to Lucy early so that we could start preparations to break camp in the morning. Lucy hits the road tomorrow. We are going to a campground closer to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

For some reason I am having trouble uploading photos at this. I will try the pictures later.

Brian

Lucy Has Escaped!

Great! That canon shot is amazing!

(On edit - somehow my phone interpreted the "o" in shot as an "i". Sorry about that!)
