Ah, don't count on going south and getting out of the smoke! We've been in the stuff for several days now in northern New Mexico!

Thanks for the heads up. I guess that it's something that we are just going to have to deal with.

You are a first class Airstreamer. You folks know how to travel as it was envisioned by most of us. Interstate RV parks is not the ideal way, but sometimes necessary. Besides, who knows more about where to find moose to tag!

I have a friend who loves to photograph fire stations, old and new. Everytime we traveled on business, off we go to find the fire station. I like to walk the streets to get a feel for the community. Walking, or hiking, really gives a guy time to get to know it. And I like to make eye contact with folks I pass by. I keep a tally of how may "good mornings" or "hellos" are returned.

Colorado has been wetter than normal. Less chance of fire here. I hope this el nino sea change will finally bring some relief to our parched friends out west. Drought and wild fires are very bad. While traveling to the Oregon Coast two years ago we were detoured around the LoLo Canyon fire south of Missoula, MT.

We called a campground for a reservation and the lady said you got to be kidding, we are being evacuated! Here is a photo of the smoke plume. Don't drive into one of those!

We are going to try our best to stay way clear of the fires. We were thinking about going up into Montana and do some exploring. We have now decided that Utah is a better choice.

Lucy is still camped on our friends' ranch. We spent most of the day Helping our friend, Larry, with some computer and wifi issues.

We took a run into town this afternoon to ship some Moose Tags, and pick up some steaks for dinner.

We came back to the ranch late this afternoon and grilled some steaks.

We plan to break camp tomorrow and start heading toward Moab, Utah. It has been a great visit in Cody, and Lucy really liked her own private campground.

We have gotten showers and have settled into Lucy for the night.

Today's pictures:

- Lucy lined up with Fred for hook-up.
- Ranch sunset.
- Baby snake.
- Larry and SuEllyn on the porch.
- Lucy in her spot.
- The sun gone down over the mountain.

Angry Moose tags

I'm probably the only guy in the forum that doesn't know what a Moose Tag is?

They are little zip-tie thingies to wrap around old-school audio/video cables and such. From their website:

"Organize your TV, VCR, DVD, sound system and
power cables behind your home entertainment
center"

...although in this day and age most people have ditched the VCR and stereo equipment (as well as home entertainment centers). People today (if they use anything besides a smart TV) usually have a single blu-ray player and everything is a simple single HDMI cable these days...or streamed via bluetooth or wi-fi.

In the days of big home stereo systems and DVD players with 3 component cables and 2 audio cables I could see these being really useful, however. I used to go mad messing with all those cables. But nowadays, the world has gone pretty much wireless...and single HDMI cables are simple to keep straight.

If I ever hook up the old system with the turntable, reel-to-reel, cassette decks, minidisc recorder, tuner, a/v switcher, dbx noise reduction, svhs vcr, dvd recorder, d-vhs recorder, 5 disc cd changer, preamp, equalizer, and power amp then I'm going to need a ton of moosetags!

Lucy broke camp this morning in Cody. We got talking to our friend, Larry, and didn't get rolling until almost noon.

We headed south out of Cody on Wyoming 120. Lucy made her way south through some desolate and beautiful countryside. We passed through Meeteetse, Thermopolis, Riverton, and arrived in Lander, Wyoming late this afternoon. We found a nice campground in Lander where Lucy is bedded down for the night.

We toured around Lander for a couple of hours before returning to Lucy for dinner. We are now settled into Lucy for the night, and all is well with the world.

Today's pictures include:

- Giant Flag at a Cody street festival.
- Off the mountain into Thermopolis.
- A few shots of the scenery south of Thermopolis on US 20, including the tunnels.
- Main street Riverton.
- Acme Theatre, Downtown Riverton.
- Grand Theatre, Downtown Lander.
- Main Street, Lander.
- Old elevator, Lander.

Lucy Explores The Great West

Love reading your travel blog. This week we started near Seattle and headed west. Still hazy, but no obvious smells of smoke. The only problem is - how do you get here from there without going through the field of fire?

We wanted to go east to Grand Teton, but it seems so much is on fire between here and there.

It's been a tough, sad year for fires in the West, that's for sure.

Lucy broke camp this morning in Lander, Wyoming, and set out on Wyoming 28, heading south toward Utah. We got going early enough to get breakfast biscuits at McDonald's. We took Highway 28 down to Farson, Wyoming, where we continued south on US 191.

These are lightly traveled routes, and we saw very little traffic all day except when we passed through Rock Springs, Wyoming where we were forced onto I-80 for about five miles to continue south on US 191. We continued through rural Wyoming into the Flaming Gorge Recreational Area. Flaming Gorge is a very large canyon that runs for more than ninety miles. It was named by early explorers for its bright red rock and soil formations.

We continued south on US 191, paralleling Flaming Gorge into Utah. The scenery along the way was spectacular, but the roadway was really close to the drop-off at points and a little unnerving. We continued to the Flaming Gorge Dam and the reservoir that it formed. We spent some time at the Dam looking around.

We continued down to Vernal, Utah. As it was getting late in the day, we got Lucy a nice little campsite, and settled in for the night.

Today's pictures include:

- Countryside along Wyoming 28.
- The road was pretty much ours.
- Flaming Gorge.
- Entering Utah.
- Reservoir.
- Gorge Dam.
- Back of Dam.
- Bridge over Gorge.
- Flowers on Main Street in Vernal.
- Lucy at campsite in Vernal.

The flowers here in Vernal are like nothing we have seen before. The flowers are on both sides of Main Street and run for about a mile just like you see them in the picture.

They also have a city park just loaded with flowers. Here is a picture of us.

Lucy packed up in Vernal this morning. We were out of the campground early, but we toured around Vernal for a while and went by the Post Office to ship some Moose Tags. Vernal is home to Utah's Dinosaurland as it is near the Dinosaur National Monument.

We then continued south on US 191 through the Utah countryside to Moab, a distance of about 250 miles. We arrived in Moab late this afternoon. We got Lucy a nice campsite and got her settled-in. We plan to stay here for several days. Moab is the closest town to two National Parks, Arches and Canyonlands.

Today's pictiures include:

- Lucy at her campsite in Vernal.
- Greeting Dinosaur in Downtown Vernal.
- The giant pink Greeting Dinosaur on the east end of Vernal.
- Vernal Theatre.
- This still operational Echo Drive-in Theatre in Ballard, Utah.
- The Echo Theatre sign.
- The Price Theatre, Price, Utah.
- The Crown Thetare, also in Price, Utah.
- The still active vintage JC Penney Store in Downtown Price, Utah.
- The Frosty Freeze Drive-in, Price, Utah.

Moab is such a beautiful city, nestled in amongst all that red rock.

It's probably too late, but a burger (or something more healthy) at classic Milt's diner in Moab is a real treat.

Not too late at all. We are going to be in Moab for three or four days. We will have to try Milt's. Thanks for the tip.

Lucy is camped in Moab, Utah. We headed out this morning to tour the South section of Canyonlands National Park. This area of the Park in called the Needles. The red rock formations in the Park were quite impressive. We spent most of the day in the Park. We took a lot of pictures of the rock formations.

All of Today's pictures were taken in and around the Park.

We got back to Lucy before dark and settled in for the night.

It was raining here in Moab, Utah this morning, so we slept in. Mid-morning we headed out to see Arches National Park. On the way we stopped in Moab to have lunch. We visited Milt's Stop N' Eat. Milt's has been operating in the same building since 1954. It is off the main drag, but worth seeking out. Milt's was recommended by an Airforums member. SuEllyn had a hamburger and I had the daily special which was a Turkey Reuben. Both were excellent and the surroundings were authentic vintage. If you ever find yourself in Moab, be sure to put Milt's on your list.

It rained off and on all day, but we still had a nice visit to the Park. We saw all the main sights in between the rain. We got a lot of good pictures in spite of the rain.

We stopped at the City Market in Moab for some supplies on the way back to the campground. We got back to Lucy well before dark and got settled in for the night.

Today's pictures include:

- Milt's Stop N' Eat in Moab.
- Several pictures of the Arches in the Park.
- A $230,000 Mercedes Benz SLS Gullwing Coupe.
- Group of spires.
- Balanced Rock.
