Lucy is still camped in Buffalo, Wyoming. We spent another day up in the Bighorn National Forest seeing the spectacular scenery and looking for Mooses. We did see some great scenery, but struck out in the Moose department. We had a really good day anyway.

The temperature in Buffalo today was 90 degrees, but up in the mountains, it was 70 degrees. It is amazing that 20 minutes of driving, and gaining 3,000 feet in elevation could make such a difference.

We were still up in the mountains as sunset approached. The temperature dropped into the 50's pretty quickly. As we started back down to Buffalo, Fred's driver window switch failed and we could not close the driver side window. It was a chilly and loud drive back to town. When we got back to Lucy, we were able to dismantle the window controller switch box and were able to make a jury rigged repair by cannibalizing parts from one of the rear window controllers. We hope that this will work until we get home.

We had visitors at Lucy tonight. Airstream friends, Brent and Connie, who live in Buffalo, stopped by to see New Lucy. We had a very nice time.

Tonight's pictures are all of our travels through the Bighorn National forest today.

Here are the pictures of the Big Horn Mountains Campground in Buffalo that I promised to post.

It is half mobile home park and half campground, but we found it just fine.

We stayed in the Buffalo KOA in July, terrific owners with two Labradors that welcome new campers. Very quite. Needed a quick in and out so we could get our truck serviced the next morning. Sheridan Ford in Sheridan WY is a great small facility for anyone going thru and needs Ford PM.

Thanks for the photos of Big Horn Mountains CG. I think we'll stick to Deer Park in Buffalo next time we pass through. Did you happen to check out any of the NFS campgrounds on Hwy 16? Apparently there is a NFS dump station up there.

The Forest Service Campgrounds in the Bighorn National Forest are already closed for the season as is the dump station.

You can still camp in a couple of the small campgrounds for free, but the water, toilets, and dumpsters are locked up for the winter.

The Liegh Creek dump station is indeed up there, on the west side of the pass. It is a nice facility with three or four lanes for simultaneous dumping. There is a box there for donations to help cover expenses. I was up there a couple of weeks ago and it was open, however, I suspect it is closed for winter as Brian said.

Alternatively, if you're looking for a dump station in Buffalo, the Cenex truck stop (not the Cenex- Co-Op) has a free dump station behind their building. It's a nice, clean, and well maintained facility. Just pull up and dump.

The rest area at the Fifth Street exit of I-90 in Sheridan also has a dump station.

Lucy broke camp this morning in Buffalo, Wyoming. We got on the road after stops at the Post Office and the gas station to get Fred filled up.

We started out on I-90. We stopped at Gillette, Wyoming to have lunch and look around town. We continued east on I-90 to Moorcroft, Wyoming, where we continued on US 16 into South Dakota

We drove on US 16 to Custer, South Dakota, where we have gotten Lucy a campsite for the next couple of days. We are in a nice little campground in downtown Custer with five point hook-ups.

We had dinner in Lucy and have settled in for the night.

Today's pictures include:

- Downtown Buffalo
- I-90 heading to Gillette.
- Rock, paper, scissors sculpture in Gillette.
- Gillette Main Street.
- 1919 Peoples Bank in Moorcroft, Wyoming.
- US 16 out of Moorcroft.
- Upton, Wyoming does not seem to have self-esteem problems.
- 1910 Weston County Courthouse, Newcastle, Wyoming.
- Main Street, Custer, South Dakota.
- Sunset at Campground in Custer.

You're going to love Custer State Park. Lots of good hiking trails. I might recommend Fred take you to Hot Springs on the southern tip of the Black Hills. You'll find many nice old sandstone buildings to photograph.

Here we are at Big Pine campground a few years ago. It is just west of Custer.

We didn't see one moose while we were there.

Lucy is camped in Custer, South Dakota. We headed out into Custer State Park to partake of some of the wildlife. There were plenty of Buffalo. There is a herd of about 1,500 head in the Park. We also saw quite a few Prairie Dogs. There are a number Prairie Dog towns in the Park. The highlight was an encounter with the Park's "Begging Burros". These animals are not native to the park. In the 1930's a number of Burros were brought into the park by a concessionaire to carry tourists to the top Harney Peak. The concessionaire went out of business and released his herd of burros into the park. The burros in the park today are the descendants of the original herd.

Over the years, these burros have learned how stop cars on the park road and beg for food. They work in teams. One will stand in the middle of the road to stop a car. Two or more of his cohorts will approach the car from both sides and demand compensation for safe passage. It's kind of like a toll that is paid with food.

These guys will eat most anything. People bring apples, carrots, chips, and cookies for them. We brought some apples, but when we ran out, we gave them some granola bars. They really liked these, and Brian developed a number of new very close friends. We stayed until we ran out of granola bars.

We headed back to Lucy, had a nice dinner, and settled in for the night.

Today's pictures include:

- Main Street, Hot Springs, South Dakota.
- Hot Springs Theatre.
- Buffalo in Custer State Park.
- Burros closing in on a target.
- Burros trying to get into Fred.
- Brian entertaining his new friends.
- Brian with more friends.
- Brian's friends checking for more granola bars in Fred.
- Prairie Dog right next to roadway.
- Prairie Dog at his tunnel access.

Ahhh, Custer State Park......and those burros.

I still have a bone deep bruise on my leg from one of the big guys who mistook a leash for a snake, I believe.

Once the leash was "dead", all was calm....I just happened to get caught in the crossfire,

Those baby burros are the dearest thing.

Travel safe.

Love Custer SP. This year we stopped on our way out to the Pacific, and were not going back, but we did. Stopped in one of our favorites places - Spearfish City Campground, if you've not been give it a shot. Next door is the DC Historic Fish Hatchery and neat place to visit and there are miles of walking paths in the area one runs along the Spearfish River.

Enjoying your posts, thanks

Just a quick note. We headed out of Custer, South Dakota this morning. We crossed into Nebraska and drove south in Colorado. We stayed on the back roads. We covered almost 400 miles and made camp in Seibert, Colorado.

We got here after dark and settled in for the night.

Pictures:

- 1891 Union Depot in Hot Springs, SD.
- Nebraska countryside.
- Colorado Highway 59.

Mooses are hard to find this year. I'm beginning to feel like we are traveling around in circles. If you'd like to change to rabbits, we have a lot of them here this year as well as lots of rabbit brush too. There's also rabbit fever (tularemia).

Banner year for all things rabbit and not so good for mooses.

Does a cross between a rabbit and a frog say "rabbit"?

Welcome to Colorado. You covered a lot of distance today. Eastern Colorado is exactly like your photograph; flat, arid plains. Cattle country.

My beagle loves to sniff yesterday's rabbit trails. She is a good example of why it takes 30 beagles to hunt rabbits. She gets all excited, runs in circles, "beagling" like crazy, nose to the ground and the rabbit is 15 feet ahead of her trotting off. Hopefully one of the beagles will look up and see the rabbit. Stupid beagle. No wonder why rabbits are doing well.

Gene, you should have been at the Gros Ventre Campground in Grand Teton NP. We had a huge bull, a cow and two smaller ones in the campground. Walked right by our AS. That bull was a beauty.

We packed up Lucy in the rain this morning in Seibert, Colorado. It was still raining when we made our way south on Colorado 59. We were one of the few cars on the road. We continued south to Kit Carson, Colorado where we picked up US 287.

We rode out of the rain on 287 before we hit the Oklahoma State Line. US 287 passes through the Oklahoma Panhandle in about 40 miles. We stopped briefly at Boise City, Oklahoma, and got Fred a tank of Diesel for $2.16/gallon.

We continued south into Texas and on to Amarillo. We have stopped here in a campground for the night.

Pictures:

- Colorado 59 on a rainy morning.
- Railroad Station in Kit Carson, Colorado.
- Lamar Theatre in Lamar, Colorado.
- Main Street, Springfield, Colorado.
- Line of Trucks on US 287.
- Cimarron Country Courthouse, Boise City, Oklahoma.
