in 1998 a friend and i were riding an iron butt sanctioned ride called the 4 corners tour. Blaine, WA->Madawaska, Maine->Key West, FL->San Ysidro, CA.

needless to say, we encountered quite a few difficult road surfaces during this 10K+ ride. as pointed out, some of the worst were in Louisiana, but Mississippi was not far behind. a bubba behind every bush made it even more interesting for us MC riders. the interstate coming down from Harrisburg was also interesting as the truckers had so beat up the right lane, they just stuck to the left lane at all times. sure glad i don't live on that coast of the US.

but it was not until we hit TX and saw the mileage marker that i realized just how BIG this state is. folks out this way think MT is big, far from it but then there is AK which beats'um all.

I think someone has watched "Easy Rider" too many times.

Funny you should say that… in a thread about Louisiana.

Back in the Sixties, some of the scenes in "Easy Rider" were filmed in Morganza, Louisiana. I would think that motorcyclists would complain more about the demise of Melancon's Café in Morganza than about the deterioration of Louisiana roads. All that's left is a plaque set into the pavement where the café used to be, to commemorate the filming.

Yup... Easy Rider, filmed thru my hometown, Franklin"... But they were going the WRONG WAY!!!!! Either they wanted a certain shot or the sun moved while they were sobering up...

people ride and enjoy riding for a variety of reasons. the Hardly Ableson crowd likes to putt around moving from one place to another racking up a couple hundred miles as a long day. those of us who ride big miles, the LD crowd, have a different objective in mind. given that big mile days are the norm for us, 800-900, we pay attention to different things, including road surfaces. i had no idea where easy rider was filmed and i must say until it was brought up here, that was news to me. i can, however, fill you in on any number of very bad roadways from one corner of our country to the other. if you ride, good for you, enjoy what you like doing the best.

I use my Hardly Ableson as a daily commuter-
I have done cross-country touring on it, but that was before I had a travel trailer-

I'd like your list of roughest roads if you don't mind! We've only encountered one road I will never travel again - it's through the mojave national preserve area between I40 and I15. We were thankful our trailer was new with good tires!

Had great and uneventful travel to Grand Isle. Campground is very nice, beaches as expected and brought home a bunch of specs. Fun trip. Thanks for all the advice.

I will be heading back down there soon. It is one of my favorite places to go. Great place to just kick back and relax.

I-20 through Bossier City and Shreveport Is the worst road I have ever traveled. At 45-50 mph the truck 'n' trailer get airborne and hop sideways. I am in constant fear that I am going to lose it. I take 220 around to the north It is only marginally better. The roads in Decatur, AL and Florence, AL are pretty bad, too. In Mississippi we have our fair share of bad roads. On some trips, the roads in our own town are the worst roads we encounter. US 82 and US 49 in Greenwood, MS are terrible. US 49 all the way through
Mississippi is bad. All of I-75 is terrible due to so much traffic- 3 lanes northbound and 3 lanes southbound from Michigan to Florida and lots of construction. I-40 in Arkansas and Tennessee has lots of construction. US 82 through Arkansas is bad.

That's number one on my list also. Close behind is I40 thru West Memphis Arkansas due to the construction. I haven't been on I59 north of Birmingham in a while but based on my last trip it rounds out my top 3 places that I will avoid even if it means many miles of slower roads

I-59 north of Birmingham seems to have infinite construction, as does I-20 east of Birmingham. US Hwy 82 through Gordo and Reform seems like it will never be 4 laned.
