Los Angles Camping
I'm signed up for a two week architectural history intensive at USC and had the bright idea that I'd stay in our Airstream while down there. I've been looking for campgrounds, the most promising won't take a trailer older than 10 years, and the others I've checked out look more than a little dodgy from the Google maps images. I'm wondering if anyone here might have a suggestion. I'm hoping not to have to drive more than half an hour to the campus, but somehow, saying that, I think it's unlikely. Thanks!

I wouldn't camp anywhere near USC. It borders south central L A lots of gang activity. I'd look for on campus temporary housing if it were me.
If you insist on bringing your trailer, try the campground just south of LAX in El Segundo at the end of the 105 freeway

Thanks Subfan1, that helps. It probably makes more sense to get some other kind of housing.

Malibu RV park is very nice but expensive. It is after all in Malibu…
Much lower on the budget scale is an RV park near Van Nuys airport.

That's pretty funny, I called Malibu and I think I'll stay there.

Good luck on staying in Malibu. Are you ready for a two hour commute to USC? Several years ago we spent 6 weeks at the KOA at the LA County/Pomona Fairplex while I did a job in LA. Safe, nice area, short walk to the LA MetroRail which takes you right downtown, one transfer to USC (or at least it used to). If you haven't tried to drive in LA during commuting hours (5AM to 10 PM), you have no idea what you're in for.

Might give the LAX Dockweiler Beach location a closer look. I've never stayed there, but it would seem to be one of the more convenient locations. Still plan for a long commute up to USC, but the 105 is right there and should be reliable for you. I stay close by there part time and prefer the south beaches (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, Redondo) over any place in SoCal.

Thanks. Dockweiler looked handy, but kind of iffy. The KOA in Pomona sounds like another good option. I figure the commute won't be easy, commuting in the SF bay area has become nightmarish, I have a benchmark. I have some time to figure it out. I really appreciate the input!

Sounds good. If you need any extra help with it, I'll be happy to ask around and do some recon. I'm a pilot and fly out of LAX, have lived in El Segundo, just drove through there today and do so every week. It's definitely a "safe" area by SoCal standards.

There's also Golden Shore RV park in Long Beach. From there, it's not too bad of a drive to USC, I used to make the commute into Downtown LA for years and USC is slightly closer. You can also take public transportation to USC.

Golden Shore and East Shore look like good bets, you guys are a huge help! So, Golden Shore is only 21 miles from USC, mornings are the issue, getting there at 9, I expect there'll be traffic no matter where, will the 110 FWY be nuts going downtown?
If anyone has any questions about places to stay in the wine country or the north coast, hit me up, I'd love to return the favor!

Me again. We've also stayed at Golden Shore and it is a terrific campground - pricy - cramped and not as convenient to the MetroRail as Pomona. BUT there is MetroRail from LB to USC, you just have to get from Golden Shore to one of the stops in the LB loop.

You have a few options if you don't want to drive to USC from Golden Shore.
Metro Blue Line - You can walk to one of the downtown LB stations and pick it up from there. Or, alternatively, you can drive up to the Willow Station. There's a parking structure that's free and this is the first station where the Blue Line has right-of-way so it's probably faster to actually drive there and park than taking it for the few stops through Long Beach.
Metro Silver Line - This is an express bus line that goes up the center of the 110. You can pick it up at the Harbor Gateway Transit center that's at the 110/405/91 junction. Traffic to that part of the commute is usually pretty open. You can park and then take the bus the rest of the way.

Forgot to mention. There is a nice RV park in Santa Clarita near the I 5 and Hwy 126 interchange.
From there you can drive down or take the Metrolink.

Thanks to all of you for outpouring of help. I've got reservations at the East Shore RV park. They were super nice to deal with, and the place looks good. I tried and tried Golden Shores, and then had kind of a weird phone interaction with them. We'll see how the commute goes, getting to USC in the morning will be the trick, and then getting back to the campground in the afternoon/early evening won't matter. I'm hoping to figure out the public transit option, but I'll also need my car some days for field work. I have to admit too, I'm looking forward to spending 2 1/2 weeks in the trailer, even if most time spent in it will be buried in books. Thanks

You're pretty close to where my office is located. You have a lot of public transportation options if you don't want to drive every day. Feel free to send me a PM and I'm happy to help.
