Looking for nice Florida campground

We are thinking of going to Florida for a 7-10 day trip maybe in February. We are new Airstreamers and would like some recommendations where the weather would be warm, the campground beautiful and in an area of other things to enjoy.

The red Coconut in the ft Myers area was great last I was there about 20 years ago. It seems to be booked through the winter though. I am sure it is still great. We want to go back before it becomes condos. A month ago we stayed at Pains prairie it was a nice state park just south of Gainesville. We also stayed at Fla. Caverns Park and it was nice. I would say it felt more like Georgia than Fla. but it was very nice. You may want to do a search for Fla. springs they are often very nice.

We winter at Travelers Rest Resort near Brooksville. Great park. Travelers Rest Resort - Dade City, Florida will give details on the many things going on there, including 9 hole usga golf course, professional entertainment on Sunday evenings and much more.

Topsail RV Resort in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida is one of the nicest campgrounds anywhere. It is in the Florida Panhandle between Panama City and Pensacola. It is part of the Florida State Parks System. Take a look at www.florida stateparks.org and look up Topsail Hill State Park. Their phone number is 1-800-325-3521. There is a lot to see and do in this area.

Great state parks!

Florida has a great state park system. Reserve early if you go. Our favorites include Henderson Beach State Park, Destin (our favorite) with it's white sand beach and a feeling of isolation while near the city. Anastasia State Park near St. Augustine ranks right up there at the top of our list. Wekiwa Springs State Park outside Orlando is a great place if visiting that area. Over on the left coast Oscar Scherer near Sarasota and the beaches offers a little warmer temperature and a good experience. Manatee Springs State Park on the Suwanee River is nice if you like the interior more than a coastal experience. The further south you intend to travel, the fewer really nice choices you'll find available, especially in February as the "Snow Birds" typically reserve a year in advance. Winter is a great time to be in Florida! Good luck and Happy Trails

Fort Desoto at St Petersburg is a favorite for me. Park and beaches are great. Even a dog beach! Close to all the Tampa/St. Petersburg area has to offer. Reservations are a must

High Springs Campground at Exit 404, or Travelers Campground at Exit 399 are great places to stop off on the way south. Or you can spend some time there and enjoy the fresh water springs area of Florida, the Santa Fe, Suwannee and Itchetuckney Springs-river area. Many other campgrounds in the area as well, most do not have websites.

I agree with Moosetags! Topsail is a veery nice campground and there is lots to see and do there. The beach area is very private and enjoyable. No one close by for miles. In Destin they have plenty of shopping at the outlet malls and one of my favorite eating places in the evening is Pompano Joe's and The Crab Trap. We have never stayed at Henderson State Park but it is very nice and it is located right across the street from Super Wal-Mart and Gas Pumps. If you are looking for a beach area this is a great area!!

Not sure what your taste are but we have always enjoyed the following three locations in Florida.

Encore RV park Nokomis Florida is located between Sarasota and Venice florida. Close to Casey Key and the public park. Additionally close to Siesta Key, Longboat Key etc. Encore has a large heated pool, wireless internet and a very friendly staff. The park has an area with water access to Dona Bay and they have free canoes for guest.

Fort De Soto state park is another wonderful site. Water access great shaded lots but traffic around the Tampa St Pete area is terrible and there are several annoying tolls to enter and exit the area.

Encore Crystal River is located on the upper west coast. Great area for fishing and just relaxing. Close proximity to quaint fishing village of Cedar Key and of course the spring fed rivers in the Crystal River area. In February and March the big attraction is swimming with the Manatees. Several nice dive shops in the area. This facility has several lots which join the water and also wireless internet.

I too am always interested in Florida campgrounds - and Topsail does look nice. But - what's the weather like over there in Feb/March? We're coming from tons of snow and really are looking for warm sunshine big time...

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

We stayed in a Seagrove condo Feb 2007. Weather was ok compared to Ohio. 40s at night 60s to 70s during the day. Lots of sunshine but there were days that were jackets required . We visited Topsail cg. Very nice lots plenty of shade I think the cost was $38 per day with no breaks for a monthly stay.
Lots of activity in Seaside, Sandestin, Destin. Not much for me west of Destin. We are going back in March 08, but further south will be our destination for Jan and Feb.

It's been a long time since we were down in Destin. As a matter of fact Topsail was still a private campground at the time (Emerald Coast). I remember that there was beach access but it was a long way down a clearing that seemed to go nowhere. Is that still the access to the beach?

I'm thinking of a November/December trip. I wonder what it's like that time of the year?

Jack

Now that the campground is part of the Florida State Park System, it is even nicer than before. It is about a quarter mile walk or bike down to the beach, but the path ahs been improved. They also have a shuttle down there. Since you ahve been there last, there is a new Publix Supermarket on US 98 about 2 miles from the park. The campground is actually nicer since the state took over about five years ago. One little downside is that the state dropped the LP gas service.

We stayed at Henderson Beach SP this April and had a great time. Wonderful campsites with lots of privacy from one site to another. Good beach access and yet there is all the convenience of malls and restaurants close by.

We also enjoyed the Yellowjacket Campground (Old Town, FL) on the Suwannee River close to Manatee Springs. Great place to kayak and then day-trip to Cedar Key for salt-water marsh paddling.
