Looking for Dude Ranch

Looking for Airstream or RV Dude Ranch (horse back riding) that is great for adults with grand kids. Open to anywhere but love SD Black Hills & mountains... spent my young years at Ranch A Beulah, Wyoming which sadly is now a state conference center. Any suggestions?

They don't build 'em like they used to

Be mindful to check the particulars for maximum allowed weights of riders.

I have perused a couple of opportunities in National Parks for various types of animal activities (Mules in Grand Canyon, Horses in Yellowstone). Often the maximum allowed rider weight (with clothes and shoes!!) is fairly low.

I have probably gotten too big to fulfill a bucket list item- riding a mule train down into the gorge of the Grand Canyon...

The V Bar Ranch near Laramie, Wyoming is outstanding and their buffalo rib steaks grilled on the trail are to die for.

There is a great place northwest of Denver called the Bar Lazy J. www.barlazyj.com They are on the Colorado River but because they are so close to the headwaters you can fly fish in it. They typically only have guests in one of their cabins on the river, but if they are full they might consider a discounted rate for a trailer. Their programs are for 7 days, they have over 70 horses and they do a wonderful job of matching you with a horse based on your ability. They also have great children's programs. Again, I don't know if they would create a special package for you but it is worth asking about. My wife and I have stayed there many times and each time is better than the last. Oh, did I mention their zip line that goes through the trees, over the Colorado River?!

Back in the late 1980's I worked a summer at Diamond J Guest Ranch in Meredith, Colorado, as a doer of all things and master of nothing. It is around 8,000 ft elevation and an easy Jeep ride to the Continental Divide.

Depending on the ages and sophistication level of your grandchildren, they may enjoy the Terry Bison Ranch, a working bison ranch south of Cheyenne, WY, and overflowing a bit into CO. And you can go through SD to get there and/or back.

You can check it out at

Try the Prude Ranch in Ft. Davis, TX. Historic & not too far from Big Bend... the actual Ft. Davis is really cool, too (as well as the town). Lots to do at the ranch & surrounding area.

The Ruby's Ranch complex at the entrance to Bryce National Park (Utah) has riding stables. We didn't ride, but our granddaughters had a great time there.

As extra entertainment, the trail guides were members of the rodeo show and practiced their tricks during the ride. Bryce Canyon is a beautiful backdrop for a fun day on horseback.

Consider Bandera, Texas, the "Cowboy Capital of the World", reflecting the # of cowboys in the Hall of Fame from Bandera. The current female champion barrel racer is from here......great western heritage! Also the Dude Ranch Capital, with the famous Dixie Dude Ranch, Mayan Dude Ranch, Twin Elm, and several others. The Twin Elm in particular has an adjacent RV park, the 2E. OK, I live here and have some partiality, but check us out!!

Maybe.

But I think you can still have all of your stuff hauled down and back out for you for a fee. And you stroll along and drink your water ( at 8# per gallon).

Why not create your own "custom" ranch scenario

Why not create your own "custom" ranch scenario here in "western Montana"?
Camp at Ekstrom's on Rock Creek Rd, 25 miles east of Missoula. You can go up the creek to ride horses for as long as you wish. Then treat your kids to a "world class trout stream". Again there are outfitters to make arrangements.

There is a great deal of wildlife within miles of your campsite, Big Horn Sheep, White Tailed and Mule Dear, Elk, Moose, Bald Eagles. Matter of fact your horseback adventures may encounter some of or all of them on a single ride!

When you're not riding or fishing there is downtown Missoula with lots of entertainment options. The National Bison Range is close by, as is the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Boone and Crockett Museum. Glacier National Park is 140 miles north or Yellowstone is 240 SE. Great museums in Butte, 100 miles east (old mining), Bozeman (4hrs East) Museum of the Rockies with one of the largest collections of dinosaurs relics in the world. There are Ghost Towns within 50 miles, or mining adventures of your own for "sapphires" close by.

Enjoy your planning that's part of the fun.

Pat

Winding River Ranch just outside the Rocky Mountain National Park near Grand Lake, Co. Check out their web site. My wife and I stayed there last year and did some rides in the RMP and they have lots of kids activities. They have their own stables. Check it out.
