"Looking"

We are looking for a campground while on the way to FLA for an overnight stay. We will be going through SC and I believe that Columbia will be about the half way point. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Bill

I remember on our trips to Myrtle Beach we used to overnight at Joanna or Johanna KOA. It was on a US highway (dual) and it was west or northwest to be exact, of Columbia. I did not see it in the current KOA directory.

I remember that the entire campground was under a pine forest with sand below the pines. Usally it was ungodly hot we had driven most of the day and they had a neat pool that we would head for as the A/C was cooling down the trailer. Another thing that was quite distinctive was that the place smelled like a Christmas tree lot.

Bad side was some pine trees dripped so I always remember cleaning a few drips of sap from the roof after I got home.

Maybe someone has traveled that route and remembers that place and if it is still in business.

Bill,

I would recomend Billy Dreher Island State Park, it is on Lake Murray about 10 to 15 miles off of I-26, there are 2 camping areas on the island I like the camping area on the back of the island. The sites are easier to get into, they do not have full hook up, just electric and water, they do have 2 dump stations. I have not been yet this year but last years rate were around $20 a night.

If you are just passing through and need a place to stop, we live out in the country about three miles off of I-26, we are about 40 miles from Columbia. You are welcome to stop there if you would like.

Jack,

The Joanna KOA has changed to Magnolia Campground, I have never stayed there, we live about 2 exits up the Interstate from there.
