Locked Out

On our first trip in our recently purchased 2015 28ft International Signature I was putting some things in the trailer at the end of the day, dark of course, and the door slammed. It locked itself. The keys were inside. I had read about this happening and fortunately was smart enough to have hidden some spare keys. I have a small lock box with a cable attached which has a combination. It easily attaches to almost anywhere and can't be lost or stolen. I would recommend this type. I bought it years ago at Bass Pro or a local hardware store, not quite sure. Bottom line have a set of spare keys hidden away somewhere. The airstream door can lock itself.

Wife has done this twice while I've been gone, I haven't and I can't reproduce the scenario. First time she had to crawl though the front bedroom outside storage (disconnect the door support wires first). We now make sure we have keys in the pocket or put a spare set in the unlocked front storage.

Eventually you will forget to put a key in your pocket or you will separately leave the trailer and the one without the key will return first.. Place one on the trailer.

Good move having spare keys that are easily accessible. I locked my self out of my Bambi II. Luckily I did have a door key stached outside the trailer. After getting my Safari I went to my local full service lock smith and had four complete sets made. I have been locked out of the Safari a couple of times. Easy to gain access using the hidden door keys.

This happened to me as well. Luckily I had my keys with me. I had a spare set made and leave it in my TV. I can unlock my TV with my phone. If I leave my phone and my keys inside, them I'm in trouble.

We have keys concealed on Lucy. We have done this from the beginning eleven years ago. We have never needed them. That is because we had them. SuEllyn and I each carry a complete set of keys for Lucy.

Just happened to us this morning and Daisy was inside when it locked from the outside! Thankfully, I have a full spare set for just this purpose. It really shouldn't happen, but it does....best to be prepared...

I leave the key in the door until going inside at night or leaving the campground.

Get a spare set of keys made, and put them in the glove compartment of the tow vehicle. Then, when this happens, you can call AAA or whoever your auto club service is, and have them unlock the tow vehicle for you. They generally won't unlock a trailer, but they will unlock a car or truck.

Locking keys in the TV, with the plan being to call a lock out service to bust in the TV doesn't sound like a very good plan to me.

We have a key holder solidly bolted to the structure of the trailer that I can reach from outside easily. The container has a push button combo lock cover. One set of spare keys lives in there. We carry several other sets.

Common problem, we were bit by this once. I've had it happen even after installing the felt washer fix that Inland RV makes available. I have a door key in a hidden location now.

I think this happens to everyone at some point. If you really get stuck, the keys to rv storage bays are pretty universal. You can trade your neighbor a beer to rent their key. Usually ends up being pretty entertaining for all involved. The wiggle through the cargo bay will also provide extra motivation to work on that middle age round about a few of us suffer from.

Happened to me just once..(abt 9 yrs ago) I had stepped outside to take a leak and look at the moon..Funny thing was..I heard the lock slide inside and knew I was locked out. Ended up calling a locksmith (security guard had cellphone) at midnight..to get into the tow vehicle for the spare key. Trust me, it only has to happen once..standing there in your shorts.the guys date with him, of course the money was in the tow too. Keep spares all over the place that you can get to.

Hi, I have never been locked out of my trailer in eleven years, but it could still happen. I keep spare trailer keys in my tow vehicle and spare tow vehicle keys in my trailer. My tow vehicle/s also have keyless entry, if I remember the numbers.

All of this advice sounds good, but I have only one key for the door of our 2004 Safari and although I've gone to hardware stores, locksmiths, online, etc. nobody can make a duplicate that works. Any ideas?

Are you saying they don't have the blank or don' know how to cut a key?
if they don't have the blank try Jackson Center for information as to who supplies them the locks. If they don't know how to cut a key find a real locksmith.

They have the blanks and when they cut the keys they look right on - but when I put them in the lock they just won't turn.

Oh, and the key that does work is so smooth it's like turning it in butter.
