Lincoln NE to Ogden UT

Heading west from Lincoln NE to Ogden UT via Cheyenne. RV and campgrounds of any sort seem sparce, especially west of Rawlins to Ogden. Any suggestions for overnights as well as comments on routing? As always, thanks to you all on the forum.
Mike

Do you want to get off of I-80 & I-84 for a while, or do you plan to shoot straight through? A small detour will get you to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/ashley...telprdb5212203

Yes, the CGs are few and far between. And it can get cold out there.

Route would be I80. Stop before dark and start late in the morning to miss any black ice that might form overnight.

Do not plan on staying at any Nebraska rest stops. Good for a bathroom break, but they all looked tight.

We stayed in North Platte at Holiday Park RV CG. Close to the interstate so get a site toward the back. Motel next door blocks some traffic noise. Not a destination, but good overnight stop. We would stay there again.

Now starts the problem. We made it to Evanston WY, but the park there closed the next day and the Walmart was jam packed with trucks. So plan carefully.

There is a KOA in Rock Springs. It is a big parking lot close to the interstate and we passed it by. With the limited availability now, we likely would check it out.

There is also a KOA in Cheyenne. Depending on your daily run ability, that is not a bad stop over. You can cut yourself a break on fees if you take an electric and water site. Then dump on the way out. Verify they see that as acceptable before you commit.

Hope someone else has a better set of ideas. It's tough out there this time of year.

Travel safe and stay warm. Pat

You did not say when you are leaving. Wyoming has a web cam system for travelers. Be sure to keep an eye in that. Weather out here can change quickly. I-80 can be brutal in the winter.
Then there are the mountains east of SLC .
There are sites at the fair grounds in Rock Springs. Not sure if they are open this time of year. It's bare bone gravel but they do have hookups. Not sure on the water this time of year. Probably not.
Look for Sweetwater Fairgrounds

Should have mentioned that we would be traveling this area in May, so not sure what the weather will be like. The CG suggestions and more especially the comments are most helpful! Thanks.

Two spots come to mind: A simple but clean commercial campground right behind the Cabelos parking lot in Sidney, NE. And approximately midway of your trip is a nice I-80 roadside park (with the Lincoln memorial bust you'll see before you get to the exit) that's on top of the pass before you drop into Chyenne. Safe travels. jon

Boom - thanks for mentioning the Summit rest area. We saw that as we went by and thought it looked interesting. Looks like separate RV parking from both the cars and the trucks. That is unique. If I remember correctly the area is also above the interstate which should help to reduce the noise. Does it work that way? Looks like a great travel stop. Pat

Curt Gowdy State Park & and the Vedawoos between Cheyenne and Laramie. If you join the Cabella's Club (no chg), you get a free night in their RV park (not the noisy truck parking area) and $25 credit in the store.

Yep, it works that way....its set back at a higher elevation. But it can be windy and colder since its at 8,000+ ft elevation. Will be sleeping there this Friday on my way to New Orleans and Florida. jon

We travelled this route in May. We ran into hail, snow and tornadoes all in the same storm as we crested a peak. We found no trouble finding overnight stops and RV parks. I like the Allstays app for finding a place to stay on the fly.

Good luck and enjoy the trip.

Two recommendations for independent full-service campgrounds:
(1) Areas Finest Country View Campground, Ogallala, Nebraska
(2) Park City RV Resort, Park City, Utah.
The second one is getting close to Ogden, but it is a nice campground.

We stayed at that Rock Springs KOA once, during the shoulder season. Any port in a storm. Man, was the weather brutal!

But depending on how you drive, it shouldn't take you that long to get from Lincoln to Ogden. This is a reasonable two-day trip.

I mentioned the CG behind Cabela's and got that look. Might want to play the card very carefully. Pat
