Unless you're traveling or dry camping, leave grey water valve open.

I interpreted the original post as "sailors dump gray water in the ocean... It's a pain to get only 4 showers into my gray tank before it's full... can't Airstreamers just dump gray water onto the ground". I was going to say "no" but OTRA15 dud a great job parsing the situation accurately.

Fcstreamer... Were you asking about a situation with sewer hookup, or just dumping at a campsite? Also, as a sailor you may be familiar with "navy showers". That approach greatly extends the life of the gray tank.

In the east and south there are very few places where you can dump gray water on the ground at campsites. Even some cg have areas where tent campers must dispose of their gray water properly.

Or you could get yourself a vintage Airstream. No gray water tank means no decision to make.

Like the others, I usually close it to collect at least half a tank to clean the black line and promote full evacuation of gray water particles. I don't leave it open for long periods of time, as I found in a couple of situations that odor from the sewage line enters the trailer through the open valve. I too have heard of back ups entering through open valves during my stays, way worse than just annoying odor. This has happened to neighbors of mine twice in low lying areas with old systems, like the Fl. Keys.

Up until 1973 Airstream trailers had no grey tanks and the water was just dumped. In anticipation of legislation enacted IIRC in 1975, making that practice illegal in State parks, grey tanks were included since 1974 model years. Many actually most of the camp sites in our Provincial parks are simply a level piece of bare earth with electrical hookups. A dish pan can be carried off into the bushes and deposited but dumping a grey tank or leaving the drain open would turn the camp site into a mud hole. Not a good idea.

In the summer heat, the gray water dumped out in normal use tends to dry fairly quickly in typical summer conditions.

I am NOT saying that I am draining my gray water out on the ground right now.....

One has to remember that sewer gas/smells are just a P-trap away, if that barrier evaporates, or sucked thru, your shower and sinks could smell.
I had a washing machine added in my last trailer, where the drain hose dropped in would give the the smell if I forgot and left the grey open at one park. I was at the far uphill end of a long run.
I don't leave mine open.

We leave our open and the morning of departure I close it as the morning dishes and a few showers gives us our rinse water. I have a spray system I use if its the last time I am at a hook up prior to returning home.

The liquid dries but the food particles remain and draws flies and even animals.

Thumbs up

W/O "hook-up's", all valves stay closed, grey flushes black when emptying.

I leave the gray tank valve open when at a campground with full hookups.
Some campgrounds without full hookups don't allow gray water discharge onto the ground, but I have let it go in a pinch- down a hill- on the far side of the trailer- after dark- in the rain. I guess I'm a bad boy.

Do unto others....
I guess you'll figure out what that stuff is where my trailer parked in your yard...

Gray water is also waste water and should be dumped at proper dump stations, or open sea and never in inland waterways or lakes.
Airstreamers should be above dumping where it's not desired by the property owner. It's just wrong.

Leaving the gray water discharge open

The soap kills the bugs....

And FWIW, if my gray water is draining on the ground right now, it is on my property, and when my 72 was built. It had no gray tank.....
