Lake Michigan Campground

We're interested in visiting the beach areas of Lake Michigan's "Gold Coast" this summer. After doing some searching, it looks like the two best places in the area are exclusively for class A motorhomes.

I would welcome any suggestions for campgrounds that are on or near the beach and can accommodate my Airstream trailer.

Thanks!

Wilderness State Park. Tip of the mitt, 35 miles west of the Mackinaw Bridge. You can make reservations on line.

It depends on what type of campground you're looking for. We went to Wilderness one time and will not go back. Sites are very, very small and very close together - no privacy at all. Very crowded - They pack them in there. When we were there there were many sites with multiple cars overlapping into the road making negotiating the narrow road difficult. We joked that it was as far from a "wilderness" as you could get. I think there are two sections; I'm describing the section near the lake. Don't know what the other section is like. The lake was nice though and if that's your main priority, it may be an okay choice for you.

There are no bad State Parks on or near Lake Michigan. As stated above, it depends on what you want and what you expect. Some are sandy and some have grass. Beaches are the best there is. Smaller communities are our favorites.

The State parks on the water fill up fast. Check the Pure MI website... it lists all state & most other campgrounds. Many of the smaller communities have municipal parks that won't show if you search for only state parks.
