Question Lake Fairfax Park, Fairfax VA

Has anyone camped at Lake Fairfax Park??? It's in a pretty congested area (Metro DC) and I'd like to know opinions on camping there. Daughter #3 is having a baby boy the Friday after Labor Day and lives just a few miles from the Park. We'd be able to be close, visit the hospital, see the new grandson etc.
TIA for any feedback

Hi Bob,

I'm not familiar with Lake Fairfax Park. But you might want to look into Pohick Bay CG. It's off of Rt. 1, just south of Fort Belvoir. Easy to get to from I-95. See attached.

Which hospital? There are at least 4 hospitals in Fairfax County.

Lake Fairfax Park

I've fished there, but have not stayed there, so cannot advise on the RV park. It looks pretty good for a metro campground.
I suggest you call them for reservations, etc, as it is fairly popular.
This came from the Internet:

Fairfax Lake Park

We've made our reservations for 5-Sep through 10-Sep. This will be our first trip with the 22AS. Daughter lives near FairOaks mall so I'd guess it's which ever hospital is closest.
Will keep the Pohick Bay CG in mind for another trip. I've already looked it up and book marked it.

Thanks for the suggestion

Lake Fairfax Park and 1st AS trip

Hello all via wi-fi from Lake Fairfax Park. We made it (only 90 miles from home for our first adventure. I know, we're a pair of weenies ). It was 90 miles full of adventure as the rains plagued us the entire way. A car stopped short in front of us and I was VERY glad for the ABS brakes on the F-150. So far, the AS is a BIG hit with both me and wife. We're already talking about how much we'll be using it over the next couple of years and how nice it will be to upgrade to maybe a 28'.

We got alot of advice from a family member who's done alot of RV'ing and have found very few things that we needed to buy once we got here. (Note to self: Flyswatters are important).

As for the park, it's a beautiful setting right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia. Campground A (the only one open after Labor Day) has 30 amp service to a number of the sites BUT NO WATER at the sites . There is fresh water available near the bathhouse but with the small capacities of our 22' AS, we'll need to make several trips there during the week to DUMP and REFILL. The Camp Store closes on Labor Day but there are grocery stores, TARGET stores and a Home Depot all within about 10 minutes from the park.
The bath house is clean and the park appears well maintained overall. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, there is a REALLY nice water park within the park. Prices are $13/day for adults and $11/day for kids.

Well, that's about all for now.

By the way, we've named the Airstream. It is now Arvin (as in RV'in).

How far are you from Washington DC? Would that be a good place to Headquarter for a DC tourist trip?

Wishing you all the best for the big event.

HQ for DC trip

Hello Waynon,
This park is about 21 miles west of downtown DC on the western edge of Fairfax county. Access to DC proper is not hard but you MUST consider DC traffic gridlock.

CAR:The best way is to go about 4 miles to I-66 and take it east directly into DC. If you're going to be going in and out of town on weekdays, the 21 mile trip can take anywhere from 1-2 hours.

Metro (subway) You can drive to the Vienna/Nutley Park and Ride and then take the Metro into DC. MUCH easier in that you don't have to worry about parking in downtown DC (Expensive and hard to find) and less hassle with other drivers.

The other thing is that there are some exceptional places to visit not far from the park. Places like the Air & Space museum at Dulles Airport , Historic Leesburg , Bull Run & Manassas for Civil War history , Colvin Run Mill @ Great Falls, Great Falls on the Potomac, Riverbend Park, Scotts Run Nature Preserve.

Take care,

Sounds just right. I'll plan to use that campground for my base while I'm there -- and NOT drive.

Now about the baby? Be sure to keep us posted.

Baby Max has arrived

Baby Max arrived this morning (9-Sep-2006) @ 10:20 am. Weighed in at 8lbs 1 oz and was 20 3/4 inches long. Came fully equipped with 10 fingers, 10 toes and a full head of wavy black hair. Mom and baby are doing great.

I'd take credit for this but being that Max is our 5th grandchild, all I do is sit around and read until they give me the news.

As a soon to be AS owner I look forward to investigating the METRO DC area's "accomodations" as far as campgrounds are concerned. I live quite close to the Park Fordtruck has mentioned. Of course up until now have NOT really had a need or big interest in campgrounds etc... Not anymore!
