Yes it is beautiful there. Went canoeing on lake McDonald, canoe camped in a tent on the far side of the lake and got caught in a snow storm on the trip back while paddling back to the regular campground where the trailer was parked. That is a special area and has some great memories for me too! Enjoy!

They're at the end of a long bumpy road, but we really enjoy canoeing on Bowman and Kintla Lakes at the northwest side of the park. Gorgeous scenery and you shake off a lot of the crowds.

If your going to be at St Mary....make it a point to "include" a trip to Waterton Lake. It's only 45 minutes at most from St Mary's Totally different topography on the Canadian side and lots of places to Kayak. Here's an example:https://whosoever.smugmug.com/Travel...ey/i-NfFDNW8/A

We spent two nights at St Mary campground. We were traveling with my in-laws with their trailer who had never been to Glacier so we booked a Red Bus tour from St Mary lodge over GTTS to Lake McDonald and back to introduce them to the park. We then moved over to Many Glacier for 5 nights them moved over to Fish Creek on the west side for 4 nights. Back home now.

We had done the Waterton day trip from Many Glacier in 2011.

In Glacier NP now. Took out our canoe from the pebble beach by the McDonald Lake ranger station at the north end of the lake. There was nobody in the water on the shore opposite the lodge-- just beautiful still water, Glacier scenery, and some bird life.

Quite a contrast to the zoo at Logan pass-- Going-to-the-Sun road is very crowded.
