In the KC area we have stayed at Worlds of Fun, no trees but very clean. And Walnut Grove campground near Prairie Village, KS mainly because our daughter lived close by. Walnut Grove is very basic, gravel mostly, but it does have trees and the people are very friendly.

How far from the city do you want to be, and what kind of campground/amenities are you looking for?

Quiet and clean, no shady characters or police raids at 2 AM. I'll sleep there but not much else. I work the conventions from 7 AM to 9 PM most nights. The less driving to the center city the better.

Then it's gotta be Worlds of Fun. Make reservations. The campground is very safe, very friendly and the sites are spacious, with concrete pads, very nice grills and tables. And the pool is nice. Worlds of Fun has a huge roller coaster on the backside of the campground but it makes me laugh every time it goes around. Getting to the convention center takes 30 minutes by the time you park and walk. The drive back in the evening is safe. Contact me with questions or recommendations for KC. Safe travels.

I haven't stayed at theses but the reviews look good and they have full hookups. I could take a look if you want.

If you don't mind a little further drive ( probably 35 to 45 minutes each way ) then to the north of the city is Basswood resort or if you want a state park, there is Weston Bend. Both are very nice with trees, etc. The SP campground has electrical at the sites, but no water or sewer hookups. Dump station at exit and fresh water available around the park.

Paula,
I'm set up at Worlds of Fun on the advice of a local regarding driving into the city in the morning and out again at night as I will have to do for the National SkillsUSA conference at the end of June (25-29). Recommend Worlds of Fun.

Driving in Downtown Kansas City

Everything is up to date in Kansas City...
they've gone about as far as they can go

Who can NOT think of "Oklahoma"?

One of the lovely ways they screw with you at convention centers is to charge you $12-$20 per day to park your car. And that's in a garage with 7 foot ceilings and 90% of the spaces marked "for compact cars only". The quad cab long bed Silverado... problematic? Naw. Cursed.

When I went to San Antonio 2 years ago, I cabbed it into and out of the city - even had a reserved cab & driver in the morning. Cost about $25 per day and I could relax instead of fighting rush hour in a strange city.

OH, that my trade organization would hold a convention in someplace like Aspen or Dollywood or Meteor Crater in Arizona... with RV parks everywhere in the vicinity.

Yep, I understand. My Silverado is a short bed, and I'm taking items in to the SkillsUSA contest in it. In any event, I'm told the traffic pattern to and from the North is the lightest. (Oklahoma was the first musical I worked when I taught band at Belleville High School in Michigan. Still know all the words to all the songs.)

Can't recommend Walnut Grove. It's one of a handful of campgrounds we have sized up and didn't stay. It was just too packed-in-like-sardines for us. We ended up in Independence, MO at the Campus RV park. It was nice and quiet. (Unfortunately, not "in the city" though.)

Do you get to do anything fun while you're there? We LOVED the WWI Museum, Truman Library & Steamboat Arabia Museums. There's so much to do in Kansas City!!!

I WORK this annual convention - 12 to 14 hours per day. If I can I'll arrive a day or two early or stay a day or two following and see the local sites. Thanks for the list of things to do.
