It started as.....

a trip to check out tax foreclosure auction properties. You know, an inexpensive plot on which to build a single space personal campground. Well off the beaten path. In the desert. Where you can see them coming in time to do something about it.

And so it began in Christmas Valley. A modest, but pleasantly empty, RV park.

A bit cool the first night. Frost on the vista in the morning. On the inside. With the heat pump on all night.

I'd say it was cold that night. A heat pump will not work below 45 degrees. At that point the resistance heater strip will kick in but they are very limited in what the can do. I would also question what source voltage you had. That will reduce the heater strip even more.

The window looks directly at the sky and a clear night on the desert you can make ice in the high 30s. Your body moisture just collected at the coldest point in the trailer.

All in all I don't see a problem that can't be fixed when the sun came out.

We have found that Lucy's heat pump works great to about 40 degrees. Below that, it is useless. At that point we switch over the furnace.

I must confess.....

..that the window in question did have the shade closed during the night. Although, the rear window was also internally frosted. Anyway...

Then it progressed to......

... a voyage of discovery.

There was wildlife.
There were open air facilities.
There were odd, open air facilities.
In places where we wont supposed to be, but couldn't help ourselves.

It was distressing to see how much can be drug out to a pristine site, and then left behind, however,.....

There were grand vistas to be had...

.....at almost every site. Simple, but grand. The daylight earthly version of those nightly celestial displays that remind you of just how much influence you really have on nature. Places where the curve of the earth is apparent and the sand piles up where it damn well pleases.

God's country.

The stated goal having been reached.....

...i.e., numerically rating and ranking (I can't help the engineer in me) the plots, getting local opinion, exhausting the list of places to consider, and, having reluctantly passed it on the way in, it was time to relocate base to the Summer Lake Hot Springs.

Why didn't this considered on the way in?

Because nothing further would have been accomplished. But, I get ahead of things.....

The first order of business....

... was to contribute to the general welfare. Seems the wind wound up to around 100 and pushed a well-seasoned Bambi and an equally experienced Overlander off their temporary mounts, leaving them both in position to join a veteran teardrop now resting on its side.

It was a labor of love....

As stated earlier,......

....nothing further would have been done had this been the original base.

Despite gusts strong enough to kick up distant dust into clouds reminiscient of a raging wildfire (hence the previously scattered veterans) and despite waking to a new white blanket (am not a snow person), the sole thoughts are, how long can this stay be extended?

Chains for Ford and Airstream?....check.
Likelihood of passes being open in two days?.....good, check.
Ability to sell completion of planned time-of-stay to the lovely and gracious mrs who had to stay home and work anyway?..... only with a promise to return with her in the future, check.

Life doesn't get any better............

The trip is over.....

...and it's back to work.

Although fully un-authorized to do so, I'd recommend the Summer Lake Hot Springs to one and all. There are about 15 full hook-up spaces with 24 hour access to the bath house and an outdoor rock pool. Their website will have the pertinent details.

Until the next trip, keep the shiny side up.
